Because (the Bodhisattva) is in the initial stage, dominated by the mind of not giving up, and abiding in the views of attachment and clinging to self and what belongs to self, therefore, please, noble one, be patient and do not grieve. I will do my best to fulfill the wishes of you and all sentient beings. Saying this three times to the beggar is helpful if the other person does not believe you or does not give wealth due to stinginess. As it is said in the Compendium of Perfections: "If a beggar appears, but one is too weak to give, in any case, do not let the beggar become discouraged, but soothe his mind with gentle words. In the future, if a beggar comes before you, in any case, do not let him become disheartened, eliminate the faults of stinginess, and strive to completely abandon greed." Therefore, stinginess and greed are obstacles to giving. Thinking: I have not been accustomed to giving in the past, so I am also stingy now. As a result, in the next life, I will not like giving and will become poor, which is inevitable. In any case, do not be dominated by it. If one is poor, this is also because one has not benefited others in previous lives. Now, even if it is easy to die from poverty, the cause of obtaining wealth in the next life is only giving. Do not reject beggars. If attachment arises to the object of giving, thinking: If I do not cling to this in any way, I will not view it with inverted notions, unable to separate from it, which is the root of suffering. Thus, sever the mind of attachment. If one does not see the benefit of the fruit of giving as the arising of Bodhi, but only sees the benefit of enjoyment, thinking: Alas! All conditioned phenomena are impermanent and subject to separation. If the fruit of giving can only be obtained once, it is like a merchant obtaining profit, although it is not merit, but like experiencing happiness in a dream. Therefore, the fruit of giving should be dedicated to attaining supreme Bodhi. In general, inexhaustible resources are not always present in all situations before obtaining the first ground. Therefore, a wise Bodhisattva, with extremely pure intention, can even emanate vast objects of giving with his mind to benefit sentient beings.
