Furthermore, giving associated with auspiciousness, giving with an arrogant mind, giving for the sake of competing with others, giving while despising beggars, giving with the conceited thought that "I am generous, but others are not," and thinking that one can be liberated from worldly and trans-worldly attachments merely by completing the act of giving, and so on. In short, fearing the burden of words, there are thirty-six kinds of impure giving. For those who have some ability to give and who pride themselves on having discipline while belittling others for being stingy and lax in their behavior, and using this to represent the rest, the Sutra on the Complete Purification of Karmic Obscurations also says that by causing anger in others, one goes to hell. When ordinary people give, they do not trust the stingy, and this causes them to become angry and go to hell, which is an obstacle to giving. When guarding precepts, if one speaks ill of those who are impure in their conduct, many people will not trust them, and this lack of trust will lead to falling into lower realms. Abiding in patience and so on, and not praising those who abide in aspects that are incompatible with patience and so on, this is an obstacle to precepts and so on. Therefore, the Protector Nagarjuna said: Even if I have perfect wealth, I should not despise others, but with a mind like melted butter, I should hide all qualities within. These words should also be kept in mind. Furthermore, the giving of a Bodhisattva is to give to the beggar who is encountered immediately upon receiving possessions. Accumulating a lot and then giving it all at once is not only a cause for arrogance and dependence on others, but during that time, various afflictions such as stinginess arise, as well as the thoughts of guarding and increasing, which hinder many virtuous deeds, and sometimes the act of giving cannot be completed due to losses in between. In short, the benefits of giving that do not displease others, such as not giving quickly and not counting favors, are: In the chapter of the Truthful One, it says: Giving with respectful offerings will be respectfully offered by relatives and so on; giving by receiving with the hands will receive respectful offerings.

If giving is done at the right time, all matters will be accomplished at the right time. If giving is done without harming others, stable enjoyments will be obtained. If giving is done with patience for discomfort, the retinue will become close. Thus it is said. Furthermore,

Furthermore, one should not give to madmen or those with disturbed minds, as they are tormented by thorns and cannot find peace. If given, it is said to be a downfall. Similarly, one should not give sons, wives, slaves, etc., to non-Buddhists, or to yakshas and rakshasas, as they may oppress with their power, be ungrateful, or forget their vows. One should not give unsuitable food and drink to those with illnesses. One should not give to heretics who seek disputes, or to those who disrespect religion but regard scriptures as wealth and request them. One should not give to others the image and meaning of scriptures that are disguised as religion. One should not give land to hunters, rivers to fishermen, adversaries to enemies, or the three robes of a monk to a bodhisattva who is not ordained, and so on, as these are inappropriate. To such people, one should not say harshly, "I will not give this to you," but rather skillfully communicate through hints. If the person is intelligent, one should say, "Do not misunderstand that I am not giving this to you because I am attached to this beautiful object. In this way, a monk's robes and other items are vowed and held after examining the khenpo and acharya. The implements of bodhisattvas are dedicated to the Buddhas and their heirs, and are held as if entrusted to oneself. Therefore, taking and giving away others' belongings without permission is a great fault for both of us." Make them understand this, and in other matters, give without going against their wishes. In general, our belongings should also be vowed from the depths of our hearts and held as if entrusted, so that we may accumulate great merit. Furthermore, those who are worthy of giving are like the Buddhas and their heirs, who have no thought of not giving anything to sentient beings. Giving in this way is permissible, and is distinguished by the difference between the intention to allow and the intention to prohibit. If one does not understand these necessities and is merely controlled by one's own stinginess, and relies on the words of the Dharma to deceive others, then it will be as the powerful one said: "My power is still small, and my roots of virtue have not yet ripened enough to bear it."
