Therefore, reciting profound Dharma words and meanings, and even sprinkling a little water, constitutes Dharma giving, which softens the mindstream and enhances it. Therefore, one should aim to eliminate the karma and afflictions of all sentient beings, and with bodhicitta, recite profound Dharma and focus on Dharma giving. Actually giving pens, ink, scriptures, etc., and teaching worldly skills such as craftsmanship, which are faultless and beneficial to the Dharma and sentient beings, are all forms of learning and teaching. Even telling stories, speaking words that incline people towards the Dharma, and slightly discussing topics related to good and evil, karma and its effects, can naturally bring great benefit to others in this degenerate age. Therefore, liberating oneself from samsara and benefiting others with the Dharma is the main purpose of giving, because material giving only temporarily alleviates suffering. Therefore, according to the capacity of the disciples, commonly teaching the collections of the Hearers, Solitary Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and Vidyadharas is middling. That is, the discipline of guarding with mindfulness, having faith in the Dharma of omniscience, enduring the scolding of others, the diligence of desiring progress, not mixing with the Lesser Vehicle, dedicating the merit of the mind to complete enlightenment through meditation, and the wisdom of knowing the emptiness of dharmata, that is, practicing the six perfections, as explained in the Great Commentary on the Eight Thousand Verses. For those of supreme intellect, establishing them in the inconceivable Dharma like the sky is clearly shown by the very scripture just quoted. Among them, a householder Bodhisattva mainly engages in material and fearlessness giving, while an ordained person should practice Dharma giving, as stated in the Pratimoksha of Bodhisattvas: "Shariputra, if a householder Bodhisattva were to fill Buddhafields as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River with the seven precious substances and offer them to the Tathagatas, Arhats, Perfectly Awakened Buddhas, compared to that, Shariputra, an ordained Bodhisattva, even if he only proclaims a four-line verse...

If a verse is declared, it will further increase merit. Shariputra, the Tathagata does not allow renunciants to perform contaminated giving. The meaning of this is: contaminated wealth is mostly easily associated with laypeople, therefore, in order to prevent renunciants from having flaws in their discipline, performing giving with wealth obtained through deception and accumulation, without considering the faults of attachment. Otherwise, it is not that the benefits of giving with wealth naturally obtained through the power of past giving are prohibited. For example, the noble Nagarjuna provided the necessities of life for many monks, and the teacher Hero, through the power of past merit, obtained a large amount of food every day, thereby benefiting all the monks. For lay bodhisattvas, those with great wisdom, there is also no prohibition against them giving the Dharma. In the house of the Licchavi family, known as Immaculate, there are eight rare qualities, as well as the six perfections, and extensive and profound teachings on the irreversible wheel of Dharma. Therefore, all the perfections of giving should possess six kinds of excellence, which is the meaning stated in the Compendium of Perfections: relying on the arising of bodhicitta is the excellent basis, no matter whether giving involves general or specific differences, not abandoning this intention is the excellent object, giving for the immediate happiness and long-term benefit of all sentient beings is the excellent intention, being embraced by non-discriminating wisdom is the excellent means, being embraced by the excellent dedication of dedicating the merit of giving to complete enlightenment, and being embraced by the excellent purity of preventing both the afflictive and cognitive obscurations. As for non-excellent thoughts, they should be discarded. As for the wrong view that giving has no result, and the idea that harm is also a practice, thereby harming the lives of sentient beings, etc., or confusing directions through deception, using the mind to trade, etc., causing other beings to travel back and forth in distant directions, giving with wealth exhausted by burdens is the same as the heretical doctrine that claims harm is also a practice.
