Because there are countless sentient beings with impoverished bodies as a basis. As it is said before: If sentient beings are poor beggars, giving is the perfection of giving, but sentient beings are still poor, how can saving them reach the other shore? In general, even if one cannot actually give away one's body and life, one should become accustomed to mental giving, which is like a seed for producing fruit. Because one is accustomed to the object, one will become like that, just as the old woman of Magadha, by meditating on a tiger, was able to block the road. Therefore, considering that the power of the mind will manifest in this life or in future lives, the *Compendium of Trainings* says that when giving food, clothing, and shelter to sentient beings from the depths of one's heart, one should think that this is another's land and use it for their benefit. If one forgets this thought and enjoys it with attachment for one's own benefit, it is a downfall with afflictions; even if there is no attachment, but one is not aware of this and enjoys it with attachment for others, it is a downfall without afflictions; if one dedicates it to others, considering it to be another's property, but uses it for oneself, it becomes taking what is not given, and if the value is complete, it will be a defeat for those who hold the vows of individual liberation. Even so, in the noble land of India, many of this teacher's works have been refuted. However, the great scholar Kṛṣṇapa said: One should not doubt the necessity of the words of a teacher who has attained accomplishment and who sees the truth, because the teacher's presence is the attainment of blessings, so saying that those necessities are merely excuses for fools. If one understands that the words of those who see the truth are not necessary, one cannot accept them for that purpose, as Chandrakirti said: "Hearing little but a hundred times cunning, speaking much without foundation, unable to be followed, is a person called Chandana." Know this. Therefore, those bodhisattvas who do not have faith, who have not separated from the net of doubt, and who do not respect the teacher's instructions, should understand this. As it is said, the words of those who see the truth have great necessity, because valuable things are not obtained by all sentient beings, so it does not constitute a downfall.
