If there is no one who does not protect their own life, then to be their ally and protector is the supreme conduct of the Bodhisattvas. When our teacher became the lord of men and a sacrificer, his domain, following wrong views, considered a great sacrifice of life for the sake of rain. At that time, that king, being under the influence of great compassion, became very uneasy and, thinking of a means, said: 'In this way, the fields will be ruined by drought, and the grass, trees, and rivers of Jambudvipa will also disappear. For the sake of rain, other sacrifices are insignificant. From my domain, prepare a sacrifice of the lives of a hundred chosen men!' So he commanded the ministers. They were all frightened and terrified, and as if listening to persuasion, they requested the cessation of the life sacrifice, and in effect gave many beings the refuge of fearlessness. Therefore, Bodhisattvas should diligently train in giving, skillful means, and using their own flesh and blood as tools, giving others a place of fearlessness. When training in this way, one should also be aware that: If one is not capable, a rash ritual, A haphazardly arranged giving is also to be condemned. If the thought of compassion is not very pure, The Compendium of Trainings forbids giving up body and life. Among these, great giving and extreme giving are the objects of those who have attained forbearance in the Dharma of non-arising. As it is said in the Sutra Requested by the Noble Near Circle: 'By abiding in forbearance in the Dharma of non-arising, one should also perform giving, great giving, and supreme giving.' Therefore, now that faith has not yet become strength, and the mind of a beginner is as fragile as the flesh of a wound, unable to endure, and very unstable in its comings and goings, if one engages directly in the great work of benefiting others before one's own disease of afflictions has been cured, there is a danger of again generating the mind of a Hearer or Solitary Realizer for the sake of benefiting others. It is like a ship capsizing in the sea, unable to endure being dry, and swimming, but the ability to swim is not yet complete, and one harms oneself. Therefore, the intention of

Although the body has already been given in terms of intention, the *Śikṣāsamuccaya* explains in detail that flesh and blood, etc., are not actually given. The source for this is also from the *Ārya-Ākāśagarbha-sūtra*, which says, "Desiring at the wrong time is the work of Māra." The *Bodhicaryāvatāra* also says, "Without a pure mind of compassion, one should not give up this body, but must make it the cause for accomplishing great benefit in this and other places." It is like that. Similarly, giving without considering whether the recipient is suitable is also a bad act; abandoning attachment to possessions is considered the standard of giving. As it is said in the *Great Ascetic's Extensive Questions*, "Whatever is wealth, that is the donor. Causing it to be done, the giving is the giver, not the donor. Giving poison, weapons, and killing living beings, and giving alcohol to the reckless is impure. Doubting the ripening of karma, and suffering from regret after giving is also impure. If one thinks of enjoying the ripening of merit oneself and not giving it to others, that is also impure. Being happy with the Buddha at the time of sickness and death, and giving through a close associate without faith is impure. Abandoning the poor and giving to the rich is impure. The ripening of those great ascetics is like planting seeds in a salty field; although it may ripen, it will not bear fruit. Great ascetic, it is like planting seeds in an unplowed and unweeded field; even if rain falls, it may grow, but it will not turn into flowers and fruit." It is taught like that. Therefore, in general, the standard for perfecting the pāramitā of giving is not to eliminate the poverty of others with the object of giving, but from the point of view of the mind, to abandon attachment to one's own body, possessions, and all roots of virtue, and to abandon miserliness like a miser. The *Bodhicaryāvatāra* says, "All possessions together with their fruits, with the mind of giving to all beings, is said to be the perfection of giving; therefore, the mind is that itself." If it were not so, who could completely eliminate the poverty experienced by each sentient being due to their own karma? Although the Buddhas of the past practiced the pāramitā of giving, there are still pretas and others.
