Arising from... What is skillful means? It is being skilled in understanding the collection of all dharmas. What is wisdom? It is being skilled in understanding that all dharmas are without distinction. Thus it is said. Among them, mandalas, offerings, and water torma, etc., are generosity. Practicing without error in what to adopt and abandon, in accordance with the entrance of one's own vehicle, is discipline. Enduring hardships in virtuous conduct is patience. Encouraging oneself and spending days and nights in virtuous conduct is diligence. Holding the mind directly on the direct object is meditation. These, when grasped by the view of the three spheres being completely pure, are wisdom. Within its scope, accumulating virtuous dharmas with the seven-branch offering, etc., and being grasped by bodhicitta and dedication, also fulfills the discipline of benefiting sentient beings. Among the four ways of gathering disciples, gathering through generosity is easy. Pleasant speech is discipline. Encouraging others to engage in virtue with words of patience and diligence, etc., and beneficial conduct, is that instruction benefiting others. Acting in accordance with the meaning is mainly accomplishing the meaning of what is taught to those to be tamed by oneself, abandoning the way of acting. This is especially important because one who has not tamed oneself cannot tame others. As stated in the Tenth Dharma Sutra: "If one strives to settle all sentient beings in taming and pacification, but one is not tamed, not pacified, and not guarded, then it is not one's own part. One should be pacified, tamed, and guarded." Thus it is said. Some ignorant ones who have not been taken care of by a spiritual friend, considering themselves to be the first wise ones, secretly abandon the meaning of the non-conceptual sutras intended for those with extremely sharp faculties, and focus on the aspect of means. This is not a fault of the Dharma, but a fault of the person. In the Condensed Compendium of Determinations, it says: "Among them, foolish people say thus: 'Bodhisattvas should only study the Prajnaparamita.' And they disparage the remaining Paramitas. Maitreya, what do you think? When I was the king of Kashi, giving my own flesh to the hawk for the sake of the pigeon, was that a corruption of wisdom?" Maitreya replied: 'Bhagavan, it was not.' The Bhagavan said: 'Maitreya, when I attained Buddhahood,'

When a Bodhisattva practices, if they accumulate virtuous roots endowed with the six perfections, do those virtuous roots cause harm? Maitreya inquired. The Blessed One replied: It is not so. Maitreya, you have perfectly accomplished the perfection of generosity for sixty eons, and the perfection of discipline for sixty eons, and so on. To this, foolish people say: Buddhahood is attained by only one means, namely, by means of emptiness. But their conduct will become completely impure. However, since the wisdom of very firm habituation is the exhaustion of defilements, for such a person there is neither abandonment nor cultivation. Why? Because what is to be abandoned and what is to be cultivated are only conceptualizations. Here, in the stage of learning the path, if one does not rely on emptiness, which possesses all aspects of skillful means and is endowed with all supreme aspects, then, by abandoning the accumulation of merit that depends on skillful means, which is the main cause of realizing emptiness, one will not be able to truly see the meaning of wisdom. Therefore, wisdom grasped by skillful means and conduct grasped by wisdom are mutually dependent and are the definite way of the path. As the noble Vimalakirti taught: What is the bondage of Bodhisattvas? What is liberation? To grasp samsara without skillful means is the bondage of Bodhisattvas. To enter samsara with skillful means is liberation. To grasp samsara without wisdom is the bondage of Bodhisattvas. To enter samsara with wisdom is liberation. Wisdom not grasped by skillful means is bondage. Wisdom grasped by skillful means is liberation. Skillful means not grasped by wisdom is bondage. Skillful means grasped by wisdom is liberation. Therefore, the union of these two is emptiness endowed with all supreme aspects. In the Ratnakuta Sutra, it says: What is emptiness endowed with all supreme aspects? It is that which is inseparable from generosity, inseparable from discipline, and so on, up to wisdom, which is extensively taught. That empti-
