reason. The training to enter is the six perfections. The first five are the supreme accumulation of merit, and the last one is the great accumulation of wisdom. Without relying on these two, it is impossible to become a Buddha. Adding skillful means, power, aspiration, and wisdom makes ten. Thus, the six perfections are the Dharma for bodhisattvas to accumulate virtue. That is, from the perspective of householders, it is patience, generosity, and discipline. As the noble Nagarjuna said: Generosity, discipline, and the Dharma of patience are especially taught to householders. Always meditate with the essence of compassion. The discipline mentioned here refers to the upasaka vow, which means to abstain from evil. From the perspective of the ordained, in the ordination ceremony of the Abhisamayalankara, it says: In the determination of the discipline, one should follow the Buddha. Therefore, the main thing for accumulating virtue is the discipline and determination, as well as meditation and so on. As it is said in the Gandavyuha Sutra: Therefore, strive diligently for the perfection of the other shore, and never forget the mind of enlightenment. Like this. In order to counteract the obscurations to be abandoned, it is divided into ten perfections. As it is said in the Madhyantavibhaga: Generosity, discipline, patience, diligence, meditation, wisdom, perfection, skillful means, power, aspiration, and wisdom. These are called the ten perfections. That is, it is divided in order to counteract the ten obscurations to be abandoned: miserliness, immoral discipline, anger, laziness, distraction, wrong wisdom, lack of skillful means, obscuration of power, failure to fulfill aspirations, and the obscuration of knowledge. If we consider it from the perspective of the six perfections, the first five, such as generosity, are the accumulation of merit, which is the cause of manifest increase, and the last one is the unerring cause of definite goodness. Even so, do not mistakenly think that these two only directly experience their respective results. If the accumulation of merit is used without skillful means and lacking wisdom, then its result will only be a large body and enjoyment in samsara, and a long life. If it is held by skillful means and profound wisdom, then it is very suitable to become the cause of omniscience, therefore it shows that skillful means and wisdom must be combined. As the precious

In the Garland of Certainty, it says: 'The Form Body, in brief, is born from the accumulation of merit of a king.' If considered from the perspective of ten, the first three of the remaining four are merit, and the latter, wisdom, is definitely the cause of goodness. If it is reasonable to establish wisdom as the cause, then the Manjushri Magical Illusion Sutra says: 'The one with merit is the accumulation of merit; wisdom is the great source of wisdom.' This is clear. Therefore, what Mahayana practitioners should accomplish is to not abide in samsara with the wisdom that realizes suchness, and to not abide in nirvana with the means connected to great compassion, that is, the state of non-abiding nirvana. This state must be accomplished through the two accumulations divided by conventional truth and ultimate truth, or through means and wisdom. As it says in the Inconceivable Secret Sutra: 'Through the accumulation of wisdom, all defilements will be abandoned. Through the accumulation of merit, all sentient beings will be closely cared for. World Honored One, since this is the case, Bodhisattvas, great beings, should strive for the accumulation of merit and wisdom.' So it is said. Furthermore, through means such as generosity, one obtains the perfect and great enjoyment of the results of the Form Body, pure lands, retinues, and so on, and by holding onto them, the Tathagatas do not abide even in complete nirvana. Because of pure wisdom, having completely abandoned the root of samsara, which is inversion, one also does not abide in samsara, and the path is free from imputation and deprivation. As it says in the Holy Dharma Collection Sutra: 'The Tathagata is born from means and wisdom, and it should also be known that he abides in the defilements of others.' Thus, in all the profound oral instruction practice sequences, first there is taking refuge, generating the mind of enlightenment, prostrations, the seven-branch offering, mandalas, the hundred-syllable mantra, the yoga of the guru and deity, and so on. These show the practice of counting in units of hundreds of thousands, which is the aspect of means. All of these are practiced by being seized by the wisdom that does not discriminate the three spheres, therefore it is the union of means and wisdom. Thus it is said in the Holy Sutra of Faith.
