To those who dwell in all directions, the complete Buddhas and Bodhicitta, to all those who possess great compassion, I prostrate with folded hands and pray: From beginningless time in samsara, in this life or in other lives, all the sins I have committed out of ignorance, or caused others to commit, and whatever I have rejoiced in due to being overwhelmed by delusion and confusion, having seen these faults, I confess to the protector with a sincere heart. I confess to all the guides all the sins I have committed through the doors of afflictions with body, speech, and mind against the Three Jewels, parents, or other teachers, and all the faults and transgressions I have accumulated, all the extremely unbearable sins of a sinful being like me. Before my sins are purified, death may come first. Please protect me quickly so that I may be liberated from this. Having confessed in this way, one rises from the downfall. In general, whether it is a root downfall or a branch downfall, in short, all faults that have not been remedied due to negligence and lack of mindfulness should be recited three times in the presence of the Three Jewels during the day and night, reciting the Sutra of the Three Heaps, and by remembering the Buddha and Bodhicitta, one will be restored. As it is said in the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra: "Three times by day and night, one should recite the Sutra of the Three Heaps, relying on the Buddhas and Bodhicitta, one will purify the remaining downfalls." Therefore, fearing the faults of falling, one should avoid being discouraged and thinking that one cannot do it now, and thus abandoning effort. One should cultivate the training with steadfastness, raising one's mind like a garuda when a crow encounters a dead snake corpse, so that one can attain the state of not being defeated by downfalls. As it says in the same text: "Even a crow behaves like a garuda when it encounters a dead snake. If I am weak, even small sins can harm me. How can one escape poverty by being timid and abandoning effort? By generating pride and effort, even the great are difficult to overcome. Therefore, with a steadfast mind, destroy all downfalls. If I am defeated by downfalls, the desire to conquer the three realms becomes a joke. I shall conquer all; let no one conquer me." So it is said.

Thus, the mind of enlightenment of the Bodhisattva according to the Madhyamaka school, which can plant the seeds of Buddhahood in many sentient beings and bestow great benefits, is broad in scope. Therefore, even ordinary beings who rely on the lay life can generate the mind of enlightenment and be suitable as a basis for the Bodhisattva vows. As Manjushri said, it is taught by the example of the Kalaviṅka bird making sounds from within the egg. It does not depend on having the same one who possesses the vows of individual liberation from among the holders of vows in the three continents. Gods, nāgas, yakshas, and so on, who can understand meaning, can understand, can be a basis for generating the Bodhisattva vows, can vow to abandon any wrongdoing, and have the desire to take them, can all generate it. And if the cause of abandoning the vows does not arise in that basis where it has arisen, they will not abandon the vows even until death, and because they possess awakened compassion, they are also called sons or daughters of the lineage. In terms of meaning, if they possess the unwavering intention towards the Buddha and sentient beings due to the distinction of emptiness and compassion, then even if they indulge in the five desirable qualities, they are still virtuous in their conduct and possess pure morality. As stated before, it is praised that the reins of their chariot can also be placed on the crown of the Tathagata. The Compendium says: If a Bodhisattva indulges in the five desirable qualities, but takes refuge in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, and thinks of attaining Buddhahood, and keeps in mind omniscience, then the wise should know that they abide in the perfection of morality. Furthermore, the Bodhisattva enjoys the five desirable qualities together with sixty-eight thousand excellent women who possess the Dharma. Thus, in the Fierce Question Sutra, it is also said: It is also proclaimed that lay Bodhisattvas can also indulge. If it were not so, then even the noble ones who have realized the two selflessnesses would not be praised because they are separated from great compassion. And those who shrink back from the difficult deeds aimed at benefiting others and abandon the burden of generating the mind of enlightenment, their conduct is more degenerate than the defeat of individual liberation. That very sutra says: If one practices the ten virtuous paths for hundreds of thousands of myriads of eons, but generates the desire to become a solitary realizer or an Arhat, then at that time the morality will have defects, morality.
