Therefore, be careful not to conceal sins. Its meaning is as stated in the Sutra of Discrimination: 'Having done extremely unpleasant deeds, it is alleviated by self-reproach.' Therefore, we are all falling into the abyss of samsara, tormented by karma and afflictions, are vessels of hundreds of sins and downfalls, and are completely subject to karma and the ripening of karma, so we must constantly think of ways to escape from it day and night, as the previous said: 'Suffering arises from non-virtue, how to be definitely free from it? Day and night I should always, only think of this.' This shows that the way to be free from suffering is to confess sins, etc. How to confess? Through the ritual of the four opponent powers, as the previous said: 'With palms together, with pain and fear, repeatedly prostrate, repeatedly confess. Please, guides, accept my sins and faults.' Thus, for the non-virtuous deeds done, with fear and shame, placing oneself in great regret, this is the power of aversion. Even if due to the influence of afflictions, the afflictions are slightly excessive, or a situation of not being able to be autonomous arises, one should again practice pure deeds a hundredfold, this is the power of reliance. As: 'This is not good, I will completely not do it in the future, repeatedly not do it.' Thus, for the non-virtuous deeds done in the past, deeply regretting, taking vows again, never committing sins, this is the power of restoration. Taking refuge in the Three Jewels and relying on the precious Bodhicitta, making sins exhausted and alleviated, this is the power of the support. As stated in the Sutra of Four Dharmas: 'Maitreya, a Bodhisattva who possesses four dharmas will overcome all the sins done and accumulated. What are the four? Namely: the power of aversion, the power of reliance, the power of restoration, and the power of the support.' Among them, the first is, if one practices non-virtuous deeds, then one is very regretful for that deed. The second is, even if one has done non-virtuous deeds, one diligently practices virtuous deeds. The third is, after taking pure precepts

One obtains the precept of not doing evil deeds. The fourth is to take refuge in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, and not to abandon the mind of enlightenment. Thus it is said. So how does one confess? Visualize the Buddha and countless Bodhisattvas in the sky in front of you, take refuge, remember the meaning of the four powers, recite the Sutra of the Three Heaps, and the verse from the "Samantabhadra's Prayer of Good Conduct," which begins, "Through the power of desire, hatred, and ignorance," or the verses from the "Bodhicharyavatara" which begin, "All you who dwell in all directions," and so forth, to confess. If you confess in this way, sins are also conditioned phenomena and will not remain together. As it says in the Sutra of the Great Lion's Roar of Maitreya: "Whatever deeds of sin have been done through ignorance, I confess. After the wise confess their faults, karma and sin do not coexist." In particular, the most excellent form of purification is to meditate on the view of emptiness. As it says in the Buddha Treasury Sutra: "Even killing one's parents and a solitary Buddha can be liberated through meditating on emptiness." The fourth branch is the branch of rejoicing. Even without any disturbance to oneself, just through the difference of intention, the act of instantly stealing the virtuous deeds of others like a bandit can only be done through rejoicing. Therefore, rejoice with satisfaction and joy for those beings who are liberated from the suffering of the lower realms and experience happiness; rejoice in the accumulation of merit and wisdom, the causes of higher rebirth and definite goodness, accumulated by others, even if one's own body and mind are not disturbed in the slightest; rejoice with joy in the complete qualities of the fully enlightened Buddhas, the three perfections of completion, maturation, and purification, and in all the boundless virtuous deeds generated by the princes and Bodhisattvas through their vows and practices. The benefit of doing so is that one does not steal the roots of virtue of others. As it says in Dandin's "Mirror of Poetry," the way to obtain merit comparable to stealing is: In the past, when King Prasenajit of Kosala continuously served the Tathagata and his disciples day and night, a poor man wandering in the streets
