One should regard all sentient beings as one's own children. One should regard them as one's own body. Thus it is said. Similarly, in order to rely on the accumulation of merit and generate the mind of the Great Vehicle, among the thousand Buddhas of the Fortunate Aeon, when the Tathagata's fame was far and wide, to the Tathagata called Electric Lamp, one offered silk banners; when the Sugata Radiant One became a beggar, one offered oil lamps to the Tathagata Amitabha, generating the mind of enlightenment by accumulating merit as a preliminary practice. Thus it is said: Opening the precious casket of the essential instructions of the Middle Way, the conditions for applying it are accumulating merit, purifying the continuum, and taking special refuge. Accumulating merit also involves performing the seven-branch practice three times during the day and three times during the night, reciting the profound Prajnaparamita Sutra, reading it, reciting dharanis, making extensive offerings to the Three Jewels, holding offering feasts and giving donations to the Sangha, holding feasts for children, giving extensive charity to the unprotected, giving extensive torma offerings to those who wander at night, and so on. Purifying the continuum also involves, as before, reciting profound sutras, reading them, reciting dharanis, performing the seven-branch practice, reciting the Sutra of the Three Aggregates, cutting off the continuity of karmic obscurations, and confessing sins with texts such as the Golden Light Sutra or the Drum Sound Chapter. Thus it is said. Taking refuge is the supreme power of reliance that overwhelms sins. In general, it is difficult for a sinful person to generate the mind of enlightenment, so as a remedy for this, it is said in the Sutra of Four Dharmas: Sins committed and accumulated will be overwhelmed by the power of reliance. Among these, the power of reliance is taking refuge in the Three Jewels and not abandoning the mind of enlightenment. Thus it is said. Among these, the distinctions of taking refuge are also explained in texts such as "Until the Essence of Enlightenment." Furthermore, the Ornament of Sutras explains five powers: the power of friends, the power of vastness, the power of the root, the power of hearing, and the power of familiarizing oneself with virtue. From the unstable to the stable arises. Thus, learn

The master Asanga, following the Karuṇāpuṇḍarīka Sūtra and the Daśadharmaka Sūtra, also said that it arises from four conditions and four powers. The four conditions are: generating the mind upon seeing the perfections of the Tathāgata; generating the mind upon seeing the benefits; generating the mind upon seeing the faults of the decline of the sacred Dharma; and generating the mind upon seeing the suffering of sentient beings. The four powers are: the power of the cause, the power of application, one's own power, and the power of others. The first of these is: those of good lineage who are accustomed to the Great Vehicle from the past, now merely hearing the qualities of the Buddha and Bodhisattvas, it arises. The second is: relying on a noble person, hearing the Dharma from them, and contemplating its meaning, etc., one becomes accustomed to the side of virtue. The third is: wanting complete enlightenment through the strength of one's own habituation to virtue is one's own power. The fourth is: wanting complete enlightenment through the strength of being urged by others is the power of others. These eight causes and conditions, arising from oneself and the power of the cause, make the cause of entering mind stable; if it arises from the power of others and application, it makes the cause of aspirational mind unstable, this is explained from this aspect. If one briefly summarizes these meanings, then faith directed towards the Buddha, compassion directed towards sentient beings, and knowing the benefits of the mind of enlightenment, these three should be understood as the unmistaken cause of generating the mind of enlightenment. Such a person who is the basis for taking the mind of enlightenment, two types are shown: one who possesses any of the seven classes of individual liberation vows, or contemplating the Three Jewels as the main basis. Subsequently, the path of the Madhyamaka school enters widely. In general, bodhicitta exists in both the Lesser and Greater Vehicles, the Śrāvakayāna school has three types: Arhats, Pratyekabuddhas, and Buddhas, but there are no rituals or practices for it. Here, the bodhicitta of the Great Vehicle has two schools, the Cittamatra and the Madhyamaka. According to the former, it is believed that it arises on the basis of any of the seven classes of individual liberation. As it says in the Lamp for the Path: Of the seven classes of individual liberation, Those who always possess other vows, Have the fortune of the vows of a Bodhisattva, Otherwise, they do not. Thus, the nature of the Madhyamaka school and these two are different.
