Therefore, those who always keep their doors open and do not frustrate the minds of beggars are called "unobstructed almsgivers." If it is worthy of praise, then even a single moment of altruistic intention to benefit all sentient beings can close the door to the lower realms and, in the realms of gods and humans, enjoy inexhaustible bliss. Just like this, a narrow-minded thought aimed only at self-interest, like a poor householder who always keeps his door open for the sake of giving alms and does not frustrate the wishes of beggars, will also be respected by people. As it is said in the *Bodhicaryāvatāra*: "Even if one gives a small amount of food to beings, just a mouthful, and reduces hatred for half a day, the world also praises this virtue." This means that even occasional small acts of merit are praised in the world. If just one unobstructed almsgiving can make one the master of the desire realm, what need is there to mention the vast mind that, through the power of familiar compassion, eliminates the immeasurable suffering of each and every sentient being without effort, with an enhanced intention? Even just having the thought, "I wish I could relieve a headache," this mind of benefiting others will be accompanied by immeasurable merit, closing the door to the lower realms and, in the realms of gods and excellent beings, enjoying inexhaustible bliss. Therefore, the *Bodhicaryāvatāra* says: "Just by thinking of healing the sickness of all sentient beings, and wishing to remove their suffering, one becomes endowed with a beneficial mind, and constantly generates immeasurable merit. What need is there to say about wanting to remove the immeasurable sufferings of each and every being, and wanting to bestow immeasurable virtues on each and every sentient being? This is accomplishing a rare thing." It also says: "One who only cherishes the thought of benefiting others surpasses the merit of offering to all the Buddhas. What comparison can there be with diligently working for the benefit of all sentient beings?" Thus, in the *Commentary on the Bodhicitta*, it is also said: "Relying on sentient beings, one attains Buddhahood, and obtains the unsurpassed fruit of enlightenment. Whatever enjoyments there are for gods and humans, Brahma, Indra, the powerful ones, and the protectors of the world, all these depend on benefiting sentient beings alone. There is nothing in the three realms that does not come from this. What need is there to say more? It is all here." Especially the merit of entering (the Bodhisattva path) is vast.

Ah! For the ritual that is pervaded by true union, from when does the mind that does not turn back arise? Having made a vow to liberate sentient beings, being extremely confident, from that time on, even if one sleeps carelessly, merit will be continuously connected. This is explained reasonably from the level of practice. Like this, making aspirations will produce great fruits when wandering in samsara, but the merit does not continuously arise in the same way as entering into practice with the mind of entering. Therefore, Maitreya Bodhisattva said, "Noble son, even aspiring to enlightenment is difficult to obtain. Even more so, entering into unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment is even more difficult to obtain." What is the reason for this? Because the mind of entering here is different from the previous mind of aspiration. As it says in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara, "When the mind of aspiration for enlightenment arises, although the fruits of samsara are great, the merit of the mind of entering is not like that, it arises continuously without interruption." It means that the merit arising from the mind of entering will not be interrupted, because those who possess the lineage of Bodhisattvas will be dominated by great compassion, and even if they do not pray, they will engage in the work of benefiting others. As it says in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara, "From when, for the sake of liberating limitless sentient beings, with a mind that does not turn back, one has truly generated that mind, from that time on, even if one sleeps or is careless, the power of merit will not be interrupted, it will arise as vast as the sky." It means that in order to liberate all sentient beings from the bonds of afflictions and the prison of samsara, until the day that samsara exists, one will not turn back from that mind, and the mind of entering with firm vows, from that time on, even if one is careless or sleeps, one will turn back from non-virtue, enter into virtue, and for the benefit of beings, one will wander about, and by the power of the merit of great compassion, the continuity of virtue will not be interrupted. As it says in the Avatamsaka Sutra, "Noble son, the actions of body, speech, and mind of one who possesses the supreme mind of enlightenment are all meaningful, because they are always merged with the single taste of virtue." This is a prophecy, and whatever aspect of virtue is closely connected with the manifestation of the mind of enlightenment.
