It is the precious Bodhicitta, the supreme and perfect intention. The Buddhas, Lords of Sages, contemplated and examined it for countless eons, and they did not see any Dharma of the Great Vehicle superior to this one. In the Sutra Requested by Maitreya, it says: Maitreya, a Bodhisattva who possesses one Dharma will abandon all bad destinies, will not fall into the hands of evil friends, and will quickly attain the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. What is that one Dharma? It is the Bodhicitta, the supreme and perfect intention. Maitreya, if one possesses that Dharma, one will abandon all bad destinies, will not fall into the hands of evil friends, and will quickly attain the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Thus it is said. The path of the noble Hearers and Solitary Realizers is merely an evil view that clings to a place of rest, with a mind of peace for oneself. Saraha said: "Whoever enters emptiness devoid of compassion, does not find the supreme path." Thus it is said. Therefore, having no deceit or trickery, aiming at one's own benefit, is called the supreme intention. In the Bodhisattva Pitaka, it says: Those who wish to quickly attain the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment should train in the Bodhicitta of supreme intention. Thus it is said. Those bound by sin and suffering in the prison of samsara, even if they have just generated Bodhicitta, obtain the crown of the name of the Victorious One's child, and delighting in themselves, even the world with gods and humans pays homage. Thus, it is appropriate to generate the mind even by aiming at temporary benefits. Sins such as hatred, and the multitude of sufferings they generate, bind beings in the prison of samsara, the house bound by craving, and even those afflicted by afflictions will, in the moment of generating the mind of enlightenment, gain the name of the sons of the Sugatas, and be worthy of being revered by the world with gods. The Avatamsaka Sutra says: "One who possesses the generation of the mind is the great offering place for all the world with gods." Thus it is praised. If it is said that the Bodhicitta arises in the first Bodhisattva ground, the Joyful One, then those who are completely entangled by bonds

How can ordinary people arise? It is because they are focused on the Dharma. This refers to those who have correctly understood the symbolism, so even non-Aryas can arise, as explained in the profound Sutras, which should be understood. In contrast to this: From amidst the dark clouds of karma and afflictions, like a fleeting flash of lightning in a storm, sometimes just a little bit of habitual merit, like a water tree, whose roots are weakened by its fruit. Like this, virtues not seized by the precious Bodhicitta only attain the fruits of gods and humans, Shravakas, or Pratyekabuddhas, and then their power is completely exhausted. For example, water trees, reeds, and bamboos wither at the roots when their fruits ripen, which is obvious, like the bending of a bamboo. As it is said in the Collection of Dedicated Verses: A mule dies from its own womb, reeds and bamboos from their fruits, and water trees are depleted by their fruits. Similarly, practices such as generosity and discipline, not seized by that method, cannot cut off the root, like chopping bamboo with a dull axe. Meditating on the generation stage is like a child looking at a temple. Meditating on the channels, energies, and completion stage is like a creature that goes underground in season. Mantras and virtues not seized by skillful means are also possessed by non-Buddhists. Look at the example of being thrown into the preta realm after meditating on the generation stage. In particular, even those who abide in the lineage of Bodhisattvas are rained upon by karma and afflictions, and there is manifest conceptualization of arrogance, as it says in the Perfection of Wisdom Sutra: Then the Mara said to the Bodhisattva: When you attain perfect enlightenment, your name will be this. And the Bodhisattva will conceptualize after that, and even without the signs of irreversibility, he will be arrogant, thinking that he has been prophesied. He will be arrogant because of that, and will also despise other Bodhisattvas. These people are unskilled in means and devoid of wisdom, not seized by virtuous friends, and having fallen into the hands of evil friends, they will fall into the level of Shravakas or Pratyekabuddhas. A mind with arrogance.
