and compassion afflicted by (afflictions), etc., as stated in the Ornament of the Sutras: "One who possesses desire and attachment touches many kinds of faults." Just as being born in the realm of desire is the cause of desire and attachment, or being born in the two upper realms is the cause of attachment to existence, as indicated in the Treasury of Knowledge: "Born from the two realms, there is attachment to existence." The other three also do not transcend the cause of samsara, because the bodhisattva's attachment to sentient beings is the opposite of this. In this way, the four immeasurables that transcend the world are not even possessed by hearers and solitary realizers, let alone the assembly of ordinary beings. As stated in the Ornament of the Sutras: "Even the world's enlightened solitary Buddhas, the Arhats, do not have this love. What need is there to speak of others besides them? How could it not be transcendent of the world?" So it is. Then, what is related to the path that transcends the world? Here, related to the path of peace, the object of focus is all sentient beings, the nature of phenomena that appear but have no inherent existence. From the power of cultivating this way, it becomes the cause of generating the two bodhicittas. Therefore, it is considered to be the four immeasurables with special characteristics. In this way, although the aspect of the object appears as the four kinds of loving-kindness, etc., without animosity towards all sentient beings, it is the opposite of the characteristic of clinging to truth and regarding it as real. That is, it is established as the nature of phenomena that appear but have no inherent existence, like an illusion. It is the cause of generating the two bodhicittas. The Blessed One said that bodhi is the nature of space. Therefore, after seeing one's own mind exactly as it is, through skillful means, one will focus on the minds of all sentient beings. And, in the Precious Lamp of the Cultivation of the Ultimate Bodhicitta by the Scholar Hero, it says: "How the phenomena that appear and are proclaimed are not established and true in that way. Because they change into many kinds, like the four forms of illusion. The essence is non-existent, like the sky, because it arises only from interdependence. It is not completely non-existent either, like the cause and effect of dreams. Truth is not established, falsehood does not revert." So it is. Such four immeasurables also do not have a fixed order of cultivation, and one focuses on whichever object is easy to generate. To this,

The explanation is that there is a definite order. As it says in the Intermediate Mother, "Good son, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva should cultivate great love, great compassion, great joy, and great equanimity." Also, as it is said in the tantras, combining with the suchness of the deity, in the Two Examinations Tantra, it says, "First, one should cultivate love. Second, one should cultivate compassion. Third, one should cultivate joy. Finally, equanimity." That which is not definite is that, following the Ornament of Clear Realization and others, aiming at what is easy to arise, there is also the order of reciting equanimity first, in order to eliminate attachment and anger towards all sentient beings, and thus to accomplish the equanimity of mind first. As it is also said in the Conventional Bodhicitta Practice of the Teacher Hero, "Therefore, first the immeasurable mind, the ground of equanimity is well leveled, the water of love is poured everywhere, the yogi of great joy, the seed of compassion is well sown." This explanation is combined with what is easy to arise. The knowledge that can be combined is this: these immeasurables also arise from four conditions, the nature that naturally exists in the realm of sentient beings is the causal condition. The virtuous friend who indicates the limit of the four is the dominant condition. The manifestation of their respective objects is the objective condition. The benefit of cultivating in this way and the habituation of the faults of not cultivating is the immediately preceding condition. As it is also said in the Ornament of the Sutras, "From the nature of happiness and suffering, arises the love of the Bodhisattva; from the nature of cause and virtuous friend, arises the compassion of the wise." In particular, the aspects of the objects that are related like mind and mental factors, these are produced by the dominant condition and the other four during samsara, the causal condition, the dominant condition, and the immediately preceding condition produce the two samadhis, and the aggregates etc. are produced from their respective causes and the dominant conditions of heat and cold etc., as it is said in the Abhidharma Kosha, "Mind and mental factors are produced by four, the two samadhis are produced by three, the rest are born from the two." This is also purification and liberation in order.

is the antidote to that. However, if cultivating loving-kindness becomes a cause for attachment, one should switch to cultivating equanimity, which is free from closeness and distance. If cultivating loving-kindness is seen as being like friends and relatives and becomes a cause for attachment, cultivating equanimity becomes the antidote to that. If it is ignorant and becomes neutral, switching to cultivating compassion can stop the cause and effect of suffering. If the mind of equanimity falls into a neutral state that is not beneficial, then when sentient beings engage in the cause of suffering and are afflicted by the result, generating great compassion can stop inferior equanimity. When compassion is weak and biased, switching to cultivating joy can stop the inferior mind. If a weak compassion arises, but manifests as a biased aspect with faults, cultivating joy in the happiness and prosperity of an unfavorable realm becomes the antidote to all inferior minds. If joy makes the mind wild and becomes an object of distraction, then loving-kindness and so on should be cultivated alternately. If cultivating joy in the happiness and prosperity of others makes the mind distracted, then loving-kindness and joy, compassion and equanimity should be cultivated alternately. That is, cultivating compassion from equanimity, and then cultivating loving-kindness from compassion is small; cultivating joy from loving-kindness is medium; cultivating loving-kindness from equanimity is great. As it says in the intermediate Mother Tantra: "Thus cultivate loving-kindness, cultivate joy, abide in compassion, take equanimity." It is said to practice in offering upwards and bestowing downwards. Furthermore, the obstacle to loving-kindness is compassion, the obstacle to compassion is joy, the obstacle to joy is equanimity, and the obstacle to equanimity is loving-kindness. Here, because the realm of sentient beings is inherently related to the incompatible aspects of the four Brahma-viharas, the method of counteracting them is mainly explained. As it also says in the Ornament of the Sutras: "The steadfast one abandons the incompatible of Brahma, possesses non-conceptual wisdom, enters the three aspects of the object, and completely ripens all sentient beings." In its commentary, it says: "Without discrimination towards others, in the three realms of happiness, suffering, and neutrality, the object benefits sentient beings. How does one enter the object? Merely not possessing happiness is equanimity."
