It is also good to be at peace. Just as one does not want suffering, so do they not want suffering. Although they desire happiness, they engage in non-virtuous actions that cause suffering. Thinking of benefiting them through the means of Dharma and material things, one should cultivate this from the depths of one's heart. At the same time, may the minds of these beings, whose virtuous trees are burned by the fierce fires of attachment and aversion, be pacified. May they not be angry with each other, and may they be able to use the mind of great equanimity! One must make vast prayers like this. The Vinaya states, "To repay benefit with benefit is supreme; harm or mediocrity is not reasonable." Thus, the characteristic of equanimity is not to be in an intermediate state of neither benefiting nor harming, but to be impartial towards the object of accomplishing benefit, without near or far. The benefit of cultivating in this way is that the mind is not distracted towards the direction of attachment and aversion, the mind is capable, and ultimately one realizes the equality of all phenomena. As the Sutra of the Ornament of Wisdom Light states, "Whatever is the characteristic of all phenomena, without an object, that is equality." Thus. In this way, if the objects of the four immeasurables are distinguished separately, then cultivating them in sequence is in accordance with the tradition of the Abhidharma Pitaka, so it is extremely important for generating experience. If one focuses on the general aspect and expands widely, although it seems like the foundation is large, in reality, one does not generate certainty about even one thing, like opening brocade in front of a child. Therefore, the Earth Chapter states, "Relying on sentient beings and the nature of phenomena, the four immeasurables with and without objects arise." Thus, for each aspect of the object of focus, sentient beings, making the experience extremely stable becomes the cause for generating the two bodhicittas in one's mindstream, and from that good intention, the accumulation of merit will greatly increase. Afterwards, the object to be cultivated, sentient beings, and the object of cultivation, all clinging to self, etc., are like illusions and dreams. Accumulation, looseness, falseness, remembering the nature of phenomena that is naturally pure, will perfect the accumulation of wisdom. The Holy Vimalakirti Sutra states: Man

Discrimination and non-discrimination are enlightenment. Thus, and so on, extensively explained. Now, to show how to abandon the four Brahma-viharas, which are the opposing factors to the four immeasurables: Loving-kindness of desire, compassion of stinginess, joy of pride, and equanimity of ignorance, are not the path to liberation. Completely abandon the aspects and proximity of the four Brahma-viharas, which are associated with signs. In this regard, without properly directing the mind, and without being seized by the mind that desires liberation, the aspect of the mind is merely conventional. Cherishing one's own son and relatives, and not caring about others at all, although it appears as loving-kindness, its essence is desire. Similarly, feeling compassion for one's own possessions such as horses, buffaloes, and cows, and not allowing them to be exploited, while treating other beings differently, is stinginess disguised as compassion. Rejoicing in the prosperity, happiness, and well-being of oneself and one's own side, while being the opposite towards practitioners, intermediate people, etc., is close to pride or jealousy. Equanimity that does not indicate feelings, and is ignorant of any beneficial or harmful objects, is related to the aspect of ignorance. These are the causes that manifest in existence, and are unrelated to the path of liberation. The Teacher, the Great Compassionate One, in the Supreme Essence, said: Shariputra, in this, loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity, which are not properly directed by the mind and do not arise accordingly, are the four Brahma-viharas, and are associated with conditioned phenomena. Loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity, which are properly directed by the mind and arise accordingly, are the four immeasurables, because they lead to the path of nirvana. Thus it is said. The four Brahma-viharas, which are different from the four immeasurables that are not seized by the mind of liberation, are not without temporary results. In the past, when a woman carrying a small child crossed the Ganges River, both of them could not bear to be separated from each other due to their loving minds, and eventually died, and it is said that they attained the state of Brahma. As stated by the teacher Shantideva: A single clear thought arising, whatever fruit it may be, such as Brahma, etc., is like that. Therefore, loving-kindness towards parents and children is attachment, and similarly, other afflictions.
