If these eight are first made equal, then the equanimity focused on sentient beings will also be easy to accomplish naturally, because eliminating bias is the characteristic of equanimity. As it is said in the Vinaya Sutra: "You should have a mind that is mutually equal and balanced towards all sentient beings." The aspect of focusing on sentient beings is like this: Because samsara is endless, if we consider each sentient being, there is none who has not been an enemy or a friend, so it is not appropriate to be attached to or hate them. The bias of enemies and friends is due to the interdependent causes and conditions of this present life, or it arises from one's own discriminating thought of holding them as enemies. Some view them as enemies, while others have loving thoughts, like the Bhagavan and the monk Legpai Karma. If one must hold someone as an enemy based on the harm they have done directly or indirectly, then in previous lives, even relatives have caused harm, and there is no end to it. Even so, because one does not want relatives to be the cause of one's own suffering, one torments them, or quarrels due to bad behavior, or retaliates by being ungrateful, etc., thus manifesting various forms of attachment and hatred, which in reality are like enemies. If one holds someone as a friend because they have given benefits, then the present enemy has also been a parent in previous lives, or a relative or friend, or has relieved poverty, or has saved lives, and is therefore very kind. The present enemy and the discriminating thought of holding them as an enemy are mostly due to both sides being unskilled in means, and small causes turning into hatred and division. In general, the great bias of enemies and friends is like clinging to the branch of an old tree, it only leads to one's own downfall and the destruction of others. There is no heavier burden on the mind than attachment and hatred, so a person with equanimity of feeling has immeasurable happiness. In particular, these sentient beings who have little learning and are full of pride are accustomed to ignorance, do not have mindfulness, and are completely not independent. Therefore, if we abandon the discriminating thought of holding them as enemies and skillfully adapt to them, then being as friendly as friends will also manifest. Both enemies and friends are abandoned in the nature of the middle ground, just as one is happy when one is comfortable, so should it be for these beings.
