I do not see the definite understanding of the cause and effect of compassion, because loving-kindness is the mind without hatred, and compassion is the mind without desire, so the cause and effect of these two, the arising and the cause of arising, are confused. Here, for the initial practitioner, one should first direct one's mind to the deer caught by the hunter, the livestock led to the slaughterhouse, the person trapped in prison, the person tormented by leprosy, the person oppressed by poverty, the blind person without friends, and the sentient beings without protection and refuge, etc. In short, for the sentient beings tormented by extremely heavy suffering, one should first direct one's mind to this and strive to easily generate great compassion that is unbearable. After becoming accustomed to this, gradually direct one's mind to all sentient beings. By relying on compassion directed in this way, one can bear the burden of the intention to benefit others. For example, when the deer Krishna Sara was chased by a hunter, because it was worried that small animals on the path would be trampled to death under its hooves, it blew them away with its nose as it fled. This is the result of the power of compassion increasing through practice. Like this, compassion that has not tamed the mindstream will mistake loving-kindness with desire for compassion. Because even eagles and wolves have biased loving-kindness, they also love and protect their own children. Therefore, the Eight Thousand Verse Prajnaparamita Sutra says, "The vast mind that is in accordance with great compassion is true and not false, and all of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas do not possess it, and it should be cultivated." Just as it says in the sutra, these sentient beings, although they are in the midst of the flames of suffering, do not know the method of liberation from it. They are entangled by hundreds and thousands of afflictions such as desire, and some are tormented by various kinds of evil views, but to encounter a teacher who is like a guiding light with the qualities is as rare as encountering a Udumbara flower. Even if one encounters a spiritual friend, one will be obstructed by one's own evil karma and various adverse conditions, so it is extremely difficult to truly walk the path of liberation. Now, these sentient beings who are still wandering in endless samsara, drifting in the waves of the ocean of suffering, there is not one who has not been my parents and relatives and friends in the past. They are abandoned by protectors and lords, and are rationally on the wrong path.

May I take upon myself the suffering of these beings! May they be liberated from suffering and constantly enjoy boundless happiness! Thinking this from the depths of one's heart. At that time, taking upon oneself the burden of suffering that befalls others, giving rise to unbearable compassion that brings tears and goosebumps; and through body, speech, and material means, saving the lives of others, eliminating poverty, and engaging in activities that actually benefit others, is the sign of compassion's shared participation. However, while harming sentient beings in both thought and action, merely uttering words of compassion and accumulating billions of bodhicitta is like a talking parrot. Therefore, learning to follow the nature of emptiness with loving-kindness and compassion that have objects is the unerring path to omniscience. As Nagarjuna said in the Stages of Meditation: 'These things without essence, all arise from discrimination; whatever is discriminated is also empty; therefore, emptiness is liberation.' Like this. Thus, great compassion is the unerring cause of the perfectly enlightened Buddha. As the sutra says: 'Whoever has a head has life; whoever has compassion has bodhicitta; whoever has bodhicitta has a Buddha.' Although this is so, compassion that is connected with the discrimination of near and far, enemy and friend, without interruption, is precisely its opposite. For those who easily generate compassion for neutral objects, if they see those of unruly behavior experiencing the consequences of their actions in this life, they will regard them as not being objects of compassion and generate hatred. If this is the case, the cause and effect of generating compassion will be destroyed. Even if one sees those sentient beings falling into hell creating the cause for falling into hell, how can they not be objects of compassion? Because they did not fall there by chance. Therefore, one should generate a desire for the benefits of compassion and train the mind in impartial compassion. By training in this way, the mind, free from harmful intentions and attachment and aversion, will become workable. As it says in the Essence: 'Great compassion makes the mind workable.'
