It is like a seed! Thus it is said. Because the skillful means of compassion and the wisdom of emptiness, the Bodhicitta that combines the two, arises from the foundation of the four immeasurables, the two of aspiration and action, and learning what is to be learned. Among them, compassion prevents falling into the extreme of peace, and wisdom prevents falling into the extreme of existence, which is the characteristic of the Bodhisattva's path. As Maitreya said: Wisdom does not abide in existence, compassion does not abide in peace, and does not dwell in Nirvana and Samsara. Therefore, if there is no Bodhicitta that combines the two, just as a bird with one wing broken cannot fly, it cannot cut off the path. The Doha Treasury says: Whoever enters emptiness without compassion, does not attain the supreme path, but even if one only meditates on compassion, one will not be liberated from this cycle of existence. Whoever is able to combine the two, neither abides in Samsara nor abides in Nirvana. And, as taught by the Noble Inexhaustible Intellect: Then, what is the skillful means of the Bodhisattva? What is the manifestation of wisdom? Because in the state of Samadhi, one observes sentient beings, therefore placing the mind closely on the object of great compassion, that is its skillful means. Because of equally entering into tranquility and extreme tranquility, that is wisdom. And so on, as widely proclaimed, it was also taught in the chapter on subduing the Maras. Having thus determined the nature of the path, from where does the ritual of practicing it arise? Although some believe that it arises from seeing the Rupakaya and Dharmakaya qualities of the Buddha, and cherishing the Mahayana teachings, etc., here, for beginners, the four immeasurables are taken as the preliminary foundation, and then it arises from the two of aspiration and action, and learning what is to be learned. As it is said in the Intermediate Mother Sutra: Subhuti, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva should cultivate great love, great compassion, great joy, and great equanimity. Thus it is said. In general, the meaning of the word "immeasurable" is revealed as four types: As taught by the teacher Buddhagupta: Thus, focusing on immeasurable sentient beings, and immeasurable assemblies, and immeasurable Dharmas, and immeasurable wisdom.

Therefore, firstly, the number of sentient beings in the three realms is immeasurable. Secondly, merit and wisdom are the two types, being the cause or essence of generation. Thirdly, the great qualities of the Buddha, such as power and fearlessness, etc. Fourthly, the object of knowledge and the knowing are undifferentiated, thus becoming the object of the Tathagata's wisdom, abiding in the essence of the four dharmas such as love. Among these, in order to explain the aspects of love's object, the essence of love is the desire for others' happiness. Just as a loving mother treats her child, accumulating body, possessions, and all virtues, learning to benefit others and endure harm. Therefore, love is the object of the direct perception of the bodhisattva who abides in the four parts of the decisive discrimination of the ground of practice with faith and desire. Seeing gods and humans, etc., and sentient beings in the evil realms suffering in those situations, unbearable great compassion arises for them. And knowing that both oneself and them have been wandering in samsara since beginningless time, and that there has been no time when they have not been relatives, therefore, for all beings, a mind like the love for an only child arises, and the nature of love arises, manifestly contemplating the means to liberate them from suffering and abide in happiness, and praying for that purpose, this is called love focused on sentient beings. Bodhisattvas from the attainment of the first ground to the seventh ground are like this: all dharmas are without inherent existence, but sentient beings cling to things as real, and therefore do not realize this, wandering in the three realms and experiencing the cause and effect of suffering, this is truly pitiful! May they realize the nature of reality by giving them the benefit of the Dharma, praying in this way, this is called love focused on the Dharma because love arises for sentient beings through the direct realization of the suchness of the Dharma. Bodhisattvas from the eighth ground onwards until the attainment of Buddhahood are called without object, in the manner of spontaneous accomplishment without conceptualization, love arises for the realm of sentient beings and they benefit them. For example, although the wish-fulfilling jewel and the wish-fulfilling tree have no conceptual thought, however they are prayed to
