Arriving at the Dharma of seeing reality. Completing the accumulation of merit, accomplishing the two Form Bodies. Just as the nature of space cannot be measured by up and down or directions, generally, the results of good and bad karma based on the Three Jewels are inconceivable, which has been repeatedly mentioned both directly and indirectly. As it is said in the scriptures: "Just as the sky has no end, And cannot be measured by spans; Likewise, the qualities and sins that rely on the Three Jewels Cannot be fathomed." Specifically, the benefits of taking refuge are mentioned in the Sutra of Immaculate Purity: "Whatever merit there is in taking refuge, If it had a form, Even if it filled all of space, It would still exceed it." And in the Condensed Perfection of Wisdom: "If the merit of refuge had a form, Even the three realms would be too small a container. The great ocean, a treasure of water, Cannot be measured by handfuls." Also, in the Sutra Requested by the Boy Ratnadatta: "Those who take refuge in the Buddha, all their virtuous qualities will increase. They are conscientious, they are ashamed. Those who take refuge in the Dharma are mindful, they have many collections of qualities, they always remember their past lives, and they possess a collection of Dharma portions. Those who take refuge in the Sangha, their minds are workable, they have many doors of samadhi and dharani, they are always of noble lineage, and even in dreams, they are inseparable from the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. Furthermore, they are protected by the gods who delight in white (virtuous) deeds, and their roots of virtue also increase." Therefore, to be included in Buddhism, generally, the distinction between inner and outer is not absolutely fixed. However, it is said that some Indian teachers like Shantipa distinguish between inner and outer through taking refuge. First, entering the Buddhist community, from the moment of obtaining refuge, sincerely regarding the Three Jewels as the refuge, such as the teacher, and not abandoning the refuge that has been obtained, is necessary. Without that, even if one performs corresponding virtuous deeds, one will not be included as a Buddhist. It becomes the basis for all vows.

Furthermore, refuge is the basis of discipline. The "Seventy Verses on Refuge" states, "All disciplines have refuge, but without refuge, there is none." Therefore, those who enter a sect must have a refuge that can serve as the basis for discipline. As mentioned earlier, "The three refuges of a layperson are the root of the eight precepts." This is because refuge strengthens the thought of Nirvana, and discipline arises from it. The commentary on the Abhidharmakosha also states, "Those who take refuge are the gateway to perfectly taking all disciplines." Moreover, taking refuge in the Three Jewels can also lighten or exhaust the previously accumulated karmic obscurations and sins. As stated in the "Sun Heart Sutra," "Whoever takes refuge in the Buddha, a million demons cannot harm them. Even if they break their vows and their minds are scattered, they will surely cross to the other shore." Furthermore, one can be liberated from harm and imminent death. The "Noble Victorious Sutra" states, "Monks, whether you dwell in a secluded place, a cemetery, or an empty wilderness, take refuge in the Three Jewels, and fear, suffering, and the feeling of having one's hair stand on end will disappear." Regarding these reasons, ignorant people also create believable stories. Once, a thief was beaten three times by a jailer with a stick. Each time the jailer struck him, he shouted as prearranged, "I take refuge in the Buddha! I take refuge in the Dharma! I take refuge in the Sangha!" Because he was beaten so severely, he hid under a bridge. At that moment, he mixed the words of refuge with his pain and repeatedly contemplated them in his mind. Suddenly, he saw many non-humans coming noisily from the other side of the bridge, saying, "There is someone here taking refuge in the Three Jewels." Then they fled. Therefore, even for those who are full of afflictive thoughts, the inconceivable nature of the Three Jewels will not falsely produce results. How much more so for those who are entangled by afflictions and bonds, wander in samsara, view the destructible aggregates as real, and stray into the path of the Hinayana, which is biased towards peace?
