Possessing qualities, being the adornment of the world, being supreme, and being immutable, therefore it is the Jewel. Thus it is said. Among them, the ultimate essence of the path to liberation from suffering and the protection from the suffering of samsara is only the Dharma Jewel, which is to repay kindness. The teacher of the Buddha is the Dharma, because the Buddha is born from the Dharma, therefore the Dharma is the mother of the Buddha, and the Buddha abides in the Dharma. Thus it is said. In the Samadhiraja Sutra, it says: Those Buddhas, the Bhagavat, have infinite and limitless qualities. They are born from the Dharma, enjoy the share of the Dharma, are emanated by the Dharma, have the Dharma as their master, arise from the Dharma, have the Dharma as their field of activity, rely on the Dharma, and are accomplished by the Dharma. Thus it is said. Because the truth of cessation and the truth of the path have the nature of abandoning faults and accomplishing qualities, and they manifest in the mindstream of the refuge taker, all the qualities of the Buddha arise from this. Moreover, the Dharma cannot arise from a cause other than the teacher, the Buddha's essence, therefore the two are like mutually dependent pillars. In the Sutra of Repaying Kindness, it says: It is asked, the teacher of the Buddha is the Dharma, why is the Dharma not mentioned first among the Three Jewels? It is answered: Although the teacher of the Buddha is the Dharma, the Dharma is not taught by anyone other than the Buddha, just as the path must be cultivated by people, therefore the Buddha is mentioned first. Thus it is said. Therefore, in order to establish the relationship of 'this arising from that,' if one knowingly reverses the order of the names, there is fault, except for those who do not know. The Sangha is the one who follows the qualities of both, therefore, although it is called a companion in cultivating the path, in reality it should be known as the basis of the three trainings, therefore one must take refuge. Thus it is said, in the Seventy Verses on Refuge, it says: The Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha are the refuge for those who desire liberation. Thus it is said. Here, although there is no contradiction to the tenets of the Greater and Lesser Vehicles, and there is no deviation from the undifferentiated path, because people are accustomed to the nature of the five obscurations such as wrong views and doubt, it is necessary to understand the meaning of refuge, the object, the difference in intention, and its

Since there is no confusion about the illusory fruit, and it possesses the connection between analogy and meaning, even if the method of correcting the mind is not explained, it should be taught like the Lesser Vehicle, understanding through scriptural authority. In the Sutra of Repaying Kindness, it says: "Taking refuge" means protection or assistance. For example, if someone commits a great crime and flees to another country, seeking refuge with the king of that country, the king of that country would say to him: "If you wish to be without fear, do not leave my country, and if you listen to my teachings, I will protect you." Just like that, ordinary people are the same. Being under the power of demons, they have the faults of birth, old age, sickness, and death. Therefore, they should turn to the Three Jewels and seek refuge. If one single-mindedly turns to the Three Jewels and does not violate the Buddha's teachings, then the sinful king of demons will have no means. Once, a pigeon, threatened by hunger, went under the shadow of Shariputra, but it was still afraid and terrified. Then, when it went under the shadow of the Buddha, there was no fear, and it did not tremble. Therefore, the Buddha possesses great love and great compassion. Shariputra does not have great love and compassion. The Buddha has no habitual tendencies, but Shariputra's habitual tendencies are not exhausted. The Buddha practiced the conduct of a Bodhisattva for three countless eons. Shariputra—if compared to the Buddha, Shariputra's love and compassion are only slightly inferior; here, a negative word is used, but it should also be understood that it is not that Shariputra has no love and compassion. He practiced austerities for sixty eons. Therefore, when the pigeon went under the shadow of Shariputra, it was still afraid and terrified, but when it went under the shadow of the Buddha, it became fearless. Question: If taking refuge in the Three Jewels can purify sins and non-virtue and one will not be afraid, then why did someone like Devadatta also take refuge in the Three Jewels, renounce his home with faith, and perfect his discipline, yet commit three of the five heinous crimes, and ultimately fall into the Avici hell?
