being put into the water. In India, a Buddhist layman was captured by non-Buddhists, who demanded that he abandon his gods and views and join their sect. If he did not, they threatened to kill him. The layman said, "In words, I will fulfill your wishes, but from the bottom of my heart, I will not give up." So he was put to death. Therefore, the first two are the faith of a beginner, which can easily be taken away by circumstances, while the latter two are the correct objects of aspiration. Furthermore, there are four causes for the arising of faith: relying on holy beings, associating with holy friends, recollecting the Three Jewels, and contemplating the faults of meaninglessness in samsara. Once one relies on a holy being who possesses qualities, because one's own nature also abides on the path of relying on others, the meaning is in accordance. Moreover, by employing whatever means to enter the path, and by practicing all actions, hearing will also increase, thereby becoming a cause for increasing faith. As it says in the Bodhisattva-piṭaka, "The so-called having faith means having great faith in the higher realms, that is, relying on a spiritual friend, desiring to see the noble ones, desiring to hear the sacred Dharma, believing in karma and its results, and recognizing that Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and Śrāvakas, etc., are spiritual friends, thereby relying on them with faith and making them happy." Similarly, associating with a person who has faith, their behavior will naturally be influenced. For example, the physician Jīvaka, by praising the qualities of the teacher, caused King Bimbisāra to develop faith. Because an impartial mind is the root of benefit, and speech is the nature of truth. As it says in the Daśadharmasūtra, "Whoever leads, that is what arises, faith is the supreme of vehicles, therefore, a person with intelligence should rely on those who follow faith." Recalling the Three Jewels increases faith because they have immeasurable qualities, which will be explained later. The Candra-garbha-sūtra also says, "The faith of firmly thinking of the Three Jewels is like a wish-fulfilling jewel." Although this is so, for ordinary people, the power of faith

There is also a great fault. What is it? It is not remembering that one will soon face death and that the body will decay in the charnel ground. These people are bound by the ropes of karma. As it is said: Those bound by the ropes of karma, sentient beings are like birds. The ability to contemplate death, even with wings, is not available. If one turns away from this, one will fear the general and specific faults of samsara, especially the unbearable nature of the suffering of the lower realms, and from this, renunciation will arise, leading to the remembrance of the qualities of the Three Jewels, opening the door to generating faith. As it is said in the Sutra Requested by Sagaramati: Faith is the door to gathering, without attachment. Abandoning leisure, it is the supreme of faith. Faith is the cause of attaining the state of victory. Those who have faith in such a Dharma, they are rare among the assembly of ordinary beings. Also, as it is said in the Bodhisattva-bhumi: Faith is wanting to hear the holy Dharma, and believing in karma and its ripening, and relying on it, making it pleasing. Therefore, the four causes for generating faith must always rely on the continuum. Without faith, even if one strives to take refuge and pray a million times, it is just a cause for the obscuration of delusion, a mere empty chatter. Even if one has great wisdom and is skilled in the classification of refuge, it is just refuge of desire and refuge of hatred. Therefore, the Tenth Dharma Sutra and the Ratnakuta Sutra agree: For people without faith, white dharmas do not arise, just as a seed burned by fire will not produce a green sprout. Regarding the benefits, the Lamp of the Jewels Sutra says: Having faith in the Buddhas and the Dharma, having faith in the conduct of the Buddha's sons, having faith in unsurpassed enlightenment, the minds of great beings will arise. Therefore, in order to explain the qualities of the Three Jewels: The qualities of the Buddhas are infinite, having abandoned the two obscurations, they have destroyed the obscurations of affliction and knowledge. Possessing the five eyes and the five superknowledges, the ten powers, the doors of dharani, the ten strengths, the four fearlessnesses, and the individual knowledges. The Buddha, complete with the eighteen unshared qualities, is the Dharmakaya possessing all excellent qualities. Among the retinue of the ten bhumis, he shows the complete enjoyment body. To this
