Explanation of the chapter. Explanation of the sixth chapter, the chapter on taking refuge. Thus, a person who possesses the fourfold retinue must first learn the method of taking refuge, which is the basis of all vows and the supreme gateway to entering the teachings, when entering the Mahayana path. When the ocean of the three fears is turbulent, the white umbrella of the fame of the Three Jewels, in whom one trusts as worthy of refuge and on whom one relies for life, is held as the very beginning of entering the teachings. There are three fears: generally, the fear of the suffering of samsara; specifically, the fear of self-interest; and very specifically, the fear of ordinary misapprehension. Thus, those who are certain to fall into samsara, like the ocean stirred by waves, the abode of cruel sea monsters, develop a mind that seeks only refuge. The logician Dignāga said: "The beginningless and endless samsara exists in the ocean. The body is devoured by unbearable sea monsters such as desire. To whom shall I go for refuge today?" Thus. Among these, belief in what is worthy of refuge is only in the Three Jewels, and not in other powerful beings such as Īśvara and fierce gods. Why? Because they themselves have not been liberated from the fears of samsara and the lower realms, so they cannot protect others, and they do not have the skill to tame those to be tamed, nor do they have great compassion without self-interest. Therefore, the teacher, the noble accomplished one, praised the Buddha after seeing his qualities: "I have abandoned other teachers and go to you for refuge. Why? Because you have no faults and your qualities are complete." Such praises. Among these, the Buddhas, the Bhagavadās, have abandoned all that should be abandoned, and have thus attained a state of fearlessness, and have realized all that should be realized, and have perfected all qualities, and thus possess both the ability and the skill to protect others from fear. And because they possess great compassion, without partiality, they are worthy of refuge. Thus it is said in the Hundred and Fifty Praises: "In whom all faults are completely and eternally absent; in whom all qualities are established in every way. If there were a mind, then...

।। Taking refuge in that very one, praising and honoring that one, and the lineage that abides in that teaching. Therefore, taking refuge in the teacher, the Buddha, in the sacred Dharma of that teaching, and in the Sangha of the Hearers and Bodhisattvas who practice it, there is no deception. Thus, even in the "Seventy Verses on Refuge," it says: The Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha are the refuge of those who desire liberation. This is also determined to be the beginning of the path. If one engages in a transcendent practice of the teachings, one cannot attain the higher path without the qualities of the lower path having arisen. Therefore, in the Nirvana Sutra, it says: Just as with the steps of a ladder, so too is my profound teaching. One should learn gradually and diligently, not transcendentally, but with ultimate adherence. So it is said. Moreover, for the protection of oneself, the outer limbs or causes have been accomplished by the Buddha himself without any omission, but because the inner limb, the power of focusing one's mind on that and taking refuge in it, is incomplete, children suffer. In "Praise of the Praiseworthy," it says: All the powers of the outer limbs, you have perfectly accomplished, but because the inner powers are incomplete, children rely on suffering. So it is said. To show that meaning, it says: To the path and qualities of going to liberation, to vow without deception as a support and vessel, is refuge itself, therefore, before that, it is crucial to know the qualities of the teacher and the teaching. After instructing thus, it says: Thus, the teacher is endowed with great compassion, therefore, the three trainings of the path to liberation, and the qualities of abandonment and realization, without omission, are accomplished beforehand as a support and vessel. For the vow that is worthy of being a refuge and is without deception, from one's own side, the main cause of taking refuge in that inner limb from the depths of one's heart, is knowing the qualities of the teacher and the teaching itself, which is primarily important. Having known that, from the initial faith to the way of guiding the mind: The root of all dharmas is faith, which is not shown in the mind of a person, seeing the teacher and reading the scriptures, in an instant, it arises like the raising of hairs. Among them, the first is the faith of conviction, likewise, desire and unwavering confidence, among the four aspects, in this state of refuge, life.
