Even if it descends, one should not turn back. Among these, the root of all happiness and well-being is faith, as stated in the Sutra of the Jewel Heap: Faith is produced like a mother in the beginning, it protects and increases all qualities. It eliminates doubts and liberates from all rivers. Faith is the symbol of a city of happiness. Faith is without turbidity and pleasing to the mind. Abandoning arrogance, it is the root of respect. Faith is the best of wealth, treasure, and feet. Like a hand, it is the root of accumulating virtue. As it is said, all qualities must first be generated based on faith. With the arising of faith, all white dharmas gather in advance, and it is also the first of the seven noble riches. As much as faith increases, so much does the accumulation of goodness and qualities increase. When it diminishes, all pure aspects also diminish like the moon being obscured by Rahu. In general, noble lineages and those with good fortune mostly have innate faith, as stated in the Garland of Jewels: Because one has faith, one relies on the Dharma. Because one possesses wisdom, one knows correctly. Among these two, wisdom is the main one, and faith is its precursor. So it is. However, as stated in the Ocean Question Sutra: A person with faith is rarer because they are far superior to others. As it is said, due to the causes and conditions of dependent origination, for lineages that have not yet awakened for a while, especially ordinary common people, just as consciousness disappears in sleep, the close association with faith is mostly in an unpredicted state. Therefore, the conditions and methods for awakening faith are crucial. Thus, seeing our teacher, who is in harmony with one's own views, or his representative, as well as seeing the images of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, hearing their qualities, reading the scriptures, and so on, are all ways to nourish faith. Like the elephant of King Ajatashatru, guided by the treasurer, the moment he saw the Blessed One, his angry and violent mind was pacified. Also, like the merchants of the Gandhara region, when the city was destroyed, the Brahmins thought that these were Buddhist lay practitioners, so they laughed at them, saying: You who do not understand the qualities of the Great Lord are extremely foolish. Thus, they refuted them and praised the doctrine that speaks of harm as the path.

When it was time to speak, they said: Whatever deeds those holy ones do, towards that which has become a miracle, those who are not holy become arrogant. Alas! The world is truly wondrous! After rebuking in this way, (they said) look at the great Brahmin! If those powerful beings were to become objects of offering, then bears, leopards, and tigers should also always be worshiped by beings. Like this, by refuting the tenets of Lama Zei, and proclaiming the virtues of the Tathagata, those people developed great faith in the Buddha. The Brahmin Thub Dka' Nagpo awakened because he saw the volumes of the scriptures, regretted his lack of merit, recognized that his own views and tenets were mistaken, and thus entered the Buddhist path, like becoming the crown ornament of all scholars—the teacher Hero. Therefore, in this present time, there is nothing that nourishes faith more than studying the sutras. Even just telling the stories of the Teacher's previous lives, and the Mahayana scripture 'The Dense Array of Ornaments' (Gandavyuha Sutra), will undoubtedly generate faith that makes one's hair stand on end. Among these, the faith of trust is: seeing that the characteristics of the Dharma, and the discipline, wisdom, and roots of virtue of the holy beings are not wasted, and thus having joy, rejoicing, and a desire of delight towards them. The faith of desire is: recognizing the characteristics of the truth of suffering, being afraid of the cycle of birth and death, and recognizing that the holy Dharma that can save us from it—the truth of cessation and the path—and the teacher who shows these are essential, like a bee longing for a flower. The faith of conviction is: from the depths of one's heart, being certain of the qualities of the Three Jewels, and believing that they will not deceive us, whether one is an ordinary person or a noble one, even the experience of peaceful happiness is seen as the grace of the Three Jewels, and even the subtle form of suffering that arises in the continuum of an Arhat is known as one's own karma, without any doubt whatsoever. The irreversible faith is: in general, whether it is the activity of hearing, thinking, and meditating, or especially at the time of taking refuge, no matter what unfavorable conditions arise, such as illness, harm, suffering, harm from enemies and spirits, or whatever great things happen, there is no turning back, like salt.
