It is said, "Virtue is beneficial." It is also said, "With virtue, one obtains a beautiful form; with virtue, one possesses discipline; with virtue, one gains glory; and thus, one becomes a possessor of enjoyment. With virtue, one obtains wisdom; with virtue, one obtains a tamed mind; with virtue, one obtains excellent results." And so on. Although it is said that all the goodness of samsara and nirvana is due to the power of virtue, the fellow practitioners each hold to their own views and do not acknowledge it as such. Then, in order to measure their respective merits, they concealed their princely status and went to other lands. The young and handsome one, because he was pleasing to see, was sustained by a small amount of enjoyment offered by the gathered people. The diligent one, like a sandalwood tree carried away by a strong river that others cannot retrieve, lived on the enjoyment that came from being drawn by the great power of diligence. The skilled one lived on the enjoyment of the wages he received from his work. The wise one lived on the reward he received for skillfully mediating a dispute between two merchants. The one with the power of virtue entered the home of a poor man, and due to the power of his virtue, much wealth, grain, gold, and silver appeared in that home. The poor man thought, "This man is unprecedented; his coming to my house must be due to my virtue," and so he treated the young man with great respect and offered him great hospitality. When these deeds spread everywhere, it happened that the king of that country had no son and was nearing the end of his lineage. The queen, ministers, and city leaders gathered together and discussed, "To whom should we entrust the throne, who has the greatest virtue?" They immediately recognized (the one with the power of virtue) and enthroned him as king. His virtue and actions worked together, bringing that country also to a state of happiness. His own father, the king, also heard of this and gave the power of his own kingdom to the young one with the power of virtue. Therefore, there is nothing more beneficial in the world than virtue, and one should rely on a special place and strive to accumulate virtue, in order to ripen the fruit in this visible life.

What is it? One hundred years after the Parinirvana of the Teacher, in the city of Pataliputra (present-day Patna, India), there was a king named Ashoka, who ruled over a quarter of the territory of a Chakravartin king. At first, he enjoyed non-virtuous deeds, but later he became very respectful of virtuous deeds. For the sake of wealth, he sent five hundred merchants to the sea to collect jewels. They went to the sea and filled a large ship with treasures such as gems, gold, silver, diamonds, beryl, conch shells, coral, and set sail towards Jambudvipa. But in the middle of the ocean, the nagas destroyed the ship, and those merchants returned with only the remnants of their lives. The king, out of desire, cleaned and decorated the garden, prepared a huge place to display all kinds of treasures, and all the people of the city gathered to see the treasures. At that time, the merchants, with only one upper garment left, came to the king in a miserable state and told him what had happened. Then, a monk named Svamin, as instructed, wrote on a copper plate: 'This land is protected by the sea. The king is the powerful Ashoka, extremely fierce and strong. Whoever takes wealth to the sea, let them quickly come to me.' He threw the letter into the sea, but the nagas were dissatisfied with the king's words and threw the plate back to Jambudvipa. Then, the messenger told the king the situation, and King Ashoka understood and began to think of a solution. At that time, a celestial being in the sky said: 'If you make offerings to the stupa of the Tathagata's relics, it will increase merit and your wishes will be fulfilled. No other mantras or medicines can do it.' He spoke these words in verse, and the king washed his hair, put on white clothes, and, holding incense and garlands of flowers, prayed and invoked the miraculous sages of the ten directions, making a great cry of lamentation. Immediately, six thousand Arhats came from all directions.
