Ah! Good thoughts cannot remain calm, feeling pain for everything, and even harming birds and wild animals, this is the root cause of the decline of merit, which destroys and brings all good things. In short, even if one does the three, hearing, thinking, and meditating, it becomes an accomplice to afflictions; even if one accumulates a little merit, it mainly relies on fame, or only focuses on dispelling obstacles; or aims at the peace and happiness of gods and humans; or mixes with sinful food; or likes to give impure fields to the king of evil deeds, those with wrong views, those who torment sentient beings, and the side of the abbot who creates monastic conflicts, these are signs of not having accumulated merit before. On the contrary, not being disturbed by karma, afflictions, and sinful thoughts, having few internal and external obstacles, and even when doing good, having discriminating wisdom and being able to use wisdom, these are signs of accumulating merit. To illustrate this, without meditation, wisdom is destroyed, pride increases and wealth is destroyed, extreme hatred destroys all good deeds, and attachment destroys true sublimity. Therefore, wisdom that is not disturbed by karma, afflictions, and sins, and that can be used with the power of wisdom and merit, is said in the scriptures to be a sign of accumulating merit. This is quoting the source of the scriptures and connecting them continuously. Therefore, merit is the similar fundamental cause of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, let alone those sentient beings who pursue special status? For example, in the Jataka tales, the king named Light Power has five sons, namely Form Power, Diligence, Skill, Wisdom, and Merit Power, who are named according to their respective meritorious parts. All five sons each insisted on and praised their own meritorious aspects. At that time, the youngest son, Merit Power, said: Without wisdom, form, skill, and diligence are of no use, and form with wisdom is useful, that is true. However, even wisdom cannot be obtained without merit. Therefore, merit
