They are sinful friends, like a poisonous tree. It is said in the Heap of Jewels Sutra: What is a sinful friend? It is one who diminishes virtue and connects with non-virtue. Do not associate with them, do not rely on them, and do not even see them. Its fault is, as stated in the Nirvana Sutra: Bodhisattvas fear bad friends as they do not fear drunken elephants, etc., because the latter only destroy the body, while the former destroys both virtue and the pure mind. It is also said in the Chapter of the Truthful One, and it is clearly stated in the Collection of Friends: Those who have no faith and are stingy, Those who lie and are gossips, Wise people should not consider them friends, Do not associate with sinful people. If those who do evil, are approached by those who do not, They will also suspect whether they are doing evil, And bad reputations will increase. Those who should not be approached but are approached, That person will become faulty due to faults. Like an arrow placed in a poisonous quiver, Even if it is not poisoned, it will be contaminated. Therefore, the merit of abandoning sinful friends is immeasurable. It is said in the Eight Thousand Verses Sutra: Subhuti, the merit of abandoning sinful friends is inconceivable. Always doing good, seeing the Tathagatas, living a life of happiness, being born in the happy realms of the heavens, and in all lifetimes, never being separated from the mind of enlightenment. And so on, it is said extensively. Therefore, by relying on virtuous teachers and friends, one can obtain good qualities and benefits, and gain advantages in this life. The Buddhas and Bodhisattvas always think in this way, and one obtains all the merits of higher realms and definite goodness. Completing the accumulations, purifying obscurations, and obtaining the two types of accomplishments. Because the qualities of the grounds and paths go from higher to higher, yogis practice and accomplish, accumulating merit and resources. Unifying one's mind with the guru is wisdom, because it is the root of the fruition of the two accumulations. Serving the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas for countless eons is superior to practicing hundreds of thousands of stages of generation. The Victorious Ones have said that a moment's remembrance of the guru is the most supreme. Thus, the virtuous spiritual friend and the virtuous friend who is like a branch of him.

Associating with virtuous friends is also of great significance. As stated in the Sutra Requested by Sagacious Arm, "Just as a one-wheeled chariot, even with a fine horse, cannot travel on the road, similarly, if a practitioner lacks companions, sentient beings will not achieve accomplishment." Moreover, its characteristics are: "They are intelligent, of good appearance, pure, with a loud voice, of noble lineage, diligent in the Dharma, brave, mighty, with subdued senses, speak pleasantly, are generous in giving, have compassion, can endure hunger, thirst, and afflictions, do not worship Brahmins or other gods, repay kindness, and have faith in the Three Jewels—these are virtuous friends." It is said that good appearance means being free from chronic illness. If one does not possess all these qualities completely, it is necessary to have at least half, a quarter, or even an eighth of them. The benefits of associating with such individuals are immeasurable; relying on their conduct, all my own virtuous qualities will increase. One turns away from evil deeds, and by explaining what to adopt and abandon, one becomes a helper in relying on a guru. Even words that are not understood can arise from this. In particular, pure conduct depends on friends, as has been said before. As stated in the Vinaya Sutra, "Pure conduct is a supreme virtuous friend; pure conduct is complete, increasing the roots of virtue, and in accordance with the cause of liberation. Therefore, those who are endowed with life should rely on it with reverence." It is said. Similarly, mindfulness and awareness are the essence of both the Sutra and Tantra paths, and with reverence for virtuous friends, one can perfect them. The Sutra states, "By relying on virtuous friends, mindfulness and awareness are purified, and the roots of virtue are perfected." It is said. In general, excellent objects of respect, such as gurus, khenpos, acharyas, as well as Dharma speakers, bodhisattvas in their final existence, shravakas, pratyekabuddhas, noble beings, parents, and the sick, etc., these objects have both merit and non-merit that are very powerful, so the results mature in this lifetime without having to go through future lives, as stated in the Sutra Pitaka. Especially now, in this degenerate age, when conceptual thoughts are coarse, before
