Or, not knowing, possessing discipline, or even towards those who violate discipline, generate the perception of a teacher. Just as one rejoices and has faith in the teacher, one should also have faith and joy in the Khenpo. Generate respect and service towards the Khenpos, and through this, the unfulfilled accumulations of enlightenment will be fulfilled, and the untamed afflictions will be tamed. Thinking thus, one obtains joy and delight, and one acts in accordance with virtuous Dharma, and acts in discordance with non-virtuous Dharma. The latter meaning of this sentence has already been explained. Furthermore, in the Sutra Requested by the Fierce One, it says: 'Householder, if a Bodhisattva receives and recites, diligently pursues the meaning, possesses generosity, discipline, patience, diligence, meditation, wisdom, or possesses the accumulation of the path of the Bodhisattva, from whom did you hear the four-line verse, receive, or take? One should have Dharma-like respect for that teacher.' For as many kalpas as the verses that show the names, sentences, and letters, if one finds that teacher without wavering, and serves and attends with respect and all offerings, householder, even so, if the respect for the teacher is not completely fulfilled, what need is there to mention non-Dharma-like respect? In short, the decrease of one fault of the disciple and the arising of one quality depend on relying on the Lama. Therefore, first, one must be skilled in searching for and examining the Lama, and in the middle, it is not enough to just find him, one must be skilled in the manner of relying on him, and finally, one cannot just associate with him naturally, but one must learn from the conduct of the holy being and the liberation. As it says in the Ornament of the Zahor, the Bhagavan said that in order to seek a virtuous friend during the three countless eons, he wandered through all the realms of the world, to the point where his feet were worn down to his hip bones. Also, as it says in the Wise and Foolish, for the sake of the Dharma, the king planted a thousand butter lamps on his own body. And the liberation of Ratnakara as described in the Heap of Jewels Sutra, and the liberation of Sadāprarudita as described in the Noble Eight Thousand Verse Prajnaparamita Sutra, and Trisong Detsen (742-797)

For the sake of spiritual mentors and the Dharma, one should endure all hardships as if dealing with subjects. The Sutra of Four Dharmas states: "Monks, Bodhisattvas do not abandon their virtuous spiritual mentors even for the sake of their lives." Thus, one should cherish virtuous spiritual mentors as one cherishes life and learn from their thoughts and actions. For example, since the Lama is said to be the embodiment of the Buddha in all profound sutras and tantras, learning the liberation of his body, speech, and mind is equivalent to learning the liberation of the Buddha. Thinking, "I too shall become like him," one should spend time listening, contemplating, and meditating. The Bodhisattva Pitaka states: "Engaging in the practice of the Lama's instructions purifies countless superior intentions, increases countless abilities, generates countless blessings, eliminates countless obstacles, transcends countless demons, enters countless Dharma gates, perfects countless accumulations, purifies countless actions, fulfills countless aspirations, and obtains countless qualities. In short, the perfection of all the Buddha's teachings depends on the Lama and originates from the Lama." Incidentally, it is also important to avoid evil friends. When a spirit who hates peace appears in the form of a human being, relies on deceitful and cunning black practices, and hates the white practices such as the curses of the holy ones, the longer one associates with them, the more evil actions spread like a whirlwind, destroying the roots of virtue. Such evil friends, whose wisdom of the Dharma is destroyed by foolish demons, should be overcome. Thus, although evil friends appear in the form of human beings, their minds are the embodiment of asuras. Directly or indirectly, they rely on those who do not pacify strife and are deluded by deceit and cunning. Their adoption and rejection of black and white are extremely contradictory. Merely associating with them increases evil and decreases virtue, so one should avoid them. As stated in the Mindfulness Sutra: "That which becomes the cause of all desire, hatred, and ignorance is...
