How is the giving of the path to enlightenment? For example, 'mudra' (ཕྱག་རྒྱ་, *hastamudrā*, hand gesture, seal) and so on, because the mudra that has been sealed on the unsurpassed enlightenment is beyond existence and non-existence. It should be known that this is like an illusion or something similar. For example, only one form is seen in the mirror, and it appears to exist in the previous place. The external object itself does not appear in the mirror, because it exists in itself. But it is also not completely different from that (the image in the mirror), because it appears in the same way. Similarly, the yogi, through the power of constantly meditating on the six limbs of yoga, is able to see the form of emptiness that is complete with all aspects, appearing in the external sky and also in the internal mind faculty. Therefore, the object that appears externally and internally is not truly existent, because it is beyond the relationship of cause and effect. But it is also not non-existent, because it becomes the object of each of the senses. Therefore, because of its distinctiveness, it illuminates the three realms and radiates immaculate, lightning-like rays of light.' This passage shows that the nature of all things that are the basis and the dependent is revealed as it is, and therefore it is called 'illuminating the three realms'. Because it is free from the habitual tendencies of samsara, it is immaculate. Because it is the nature of clear light, it is like lightning (similar, but not exactly the same). Because it is the nature of the five transcendent wisdoms, it is called 'radiating multiple rays of light.' Where does it reside? It is said in the sutra: 'There is no difference between the outside and the body.' So, if it dwells in the outside and the body, why do sentient beings not see it? It is said: 'It is apart from objects.' In the middle of the sky, by the power of emptiness, when the eye faculty and so on abandon objects such as form, the yogi is able to see it with a nature that is inseparable from the outside and the body, like the sun and sunlight. It cannot be seen until the connection between the grasper and the grasped is broken. What is it like? 'It is merely an appearance,' which means that it transcends substance and appears like an image in a dream or the moon in water. Where does it appear? 'It dwells in the sky,' for example, in the clear --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just as an image is seen in a mirror, so too is it seen in a cloudless sky. What is seen? The so-called 'form of mind' is one's own mind (empty form) that has transcended the defilements of habitual tendencies, and not something else. From where does the form of emptiness, which is the nature of mind, arise? The so-called 'arising from mind' is like the various appearances that arise from the ordinary mind in a dream state; similarly, it arises from the mind of samsara, and not from anything else. If it arises from the mind, then how does it exist externally? The so-called 'embracing many (forms of minds)' means that (the mind itself) embraces them, which refers to one principle. For example, just as one sun appears as many in countless pots filled with water, the Mahamudra resides in the hearts of all sentient beings. It does not become many due to different supports, just as one sun appears as an image in each pot. If it exists through the relationship of support and supported, wouldn't the supported disappear without the support? It can be said so, but it is not the case, because it exists in the manner of pervader and pervaded, and not in the relationship of support and supported (producer and produced). Just as one sun pervades all things such as pots with its light, so too does it pervade by its very nature. Even if it exists in the relationship of support and supported, there is no fault, just as the sun does not perish when a pot is destroyed, so too should it be understood that the mind of nirvana does not perish when the mind of samsara perishes. Therefore, the relationship of support and supported is for mind and wisdom, and not for the body and so on. Therefore, the Mahamudra that illuminates one's own mind and illuminates the three realms bestows unsurpassed enlightenment, and not (annihilation, etc.) partial (emptiness), nor the wisdom seal of the nature of conceptual thought, nor the action seal, and so on. (36) To further illustrate this point, the mind is without defilement. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
