He was born as the son of Yum Chenrezig's yogini Dorje Bum. From a young age, he possessed faith, wisdom, and clairvoyance, among other qualities. At Lholung Monastery, he received ordination from Khenpo Shakya Phendepa, and was given the name Namkha Gyaltsen. He extensively studied and contemplated the teachings of both Sutra and Tantra. In particular, he received the methods of Niguma from Muschen Gyaltsen Pal Zang and practiced them for a month, effortlessly generating bliss and warmth. He also received other teachings as appropriate, and fully received the teachings from Lama Dorje Yönnu. At the age of twenty, he received full ordination from the previous Khenpo. Furthermore, he received countless instructions from many holy lamas. Except for the times when he was listening to the Dharma, he single-mindedly devoted himself to practice in secluded retreats, thus generating renunciation and impartial compassion, and attaining realization of Mahamudra. Many yidam deities, such as Mahakarunika, blessed him. He possessed many doors of samadhi and vast clairvoyance. He also had Dharma protectors as servants. Since he had mastery over countless qualities, he placed countless disciples in the state of maturation and liberation. Among them were Kagyupa Paljor Sherab, Rongtön Sheja Kunrig, Sempa Yönnu Gyalchok, Muschen Könchok Gyaltsen, Drubchen Thangtong Gyalpo, Khedrub Gelek Palzang, and others who were learned, disciplined, and possessed experiential realization, as well as those whose activities were boundless. They propagated the general teachings of the Buddha and, in particular, made the precious teachings of the glorious Shangpa Kagyu as bright as day. He lived to the age of ninety-three and, on the twenty-sixth day of the second month of the Rat year, he dissolved his mind into the realm of great peace. At that time, there appeared rainbows, light, pleasant sounds, and fragrant odors, and a great rain of flowers fell. Some who had purified their karma saw him depart to places such as Oddiyana and Sukhavati. When his body was cremated, relics and remains beyond number appeared, and these inconceivable wonders caused the followers to be established in faith. A detailed biography of him can be found in the biography written by Kachuwa Rinchen Dar, as well as in the supplementary biography covering the period up to the age of eighty-four.

The great translator Wangpo Ngurmey Dechen was born into the lineage of the great accomplished Iron Chain Master, on an auspicious waxing day of the Minyak month in the Iron Rat year (1900), accompanied by wondrous signs. He had a karmic connection as a master and disciple in many lifetimes with Mendong Lotsawa, the accomplished master Ratna Bhadra, who bestowed upon him the name 'Ngurmey Dechen' and prophesied many lineages. At the age of ten, he received the empowerment of the Secret Lord (Vajrapani) from the Vajra Master Lhundrup Palden and recited it. Starting from the age of thirteen, he attended upon the lotus feet of Jetsun Sonam Tsemo and took the novice vows. He studied the Lamdre, the profound teachings of Niguma, and the Sakya school's teachings and ocean-like instructions. At the age of twenty, he received full ordination from the great translator Ratna Bhadra and heard the practical instructions on the Six Yogas. For four years and eight months, he firmly established the victory banner of practice, received the transference of blessings, and freely possessed boundless faith, renunciation, compassion, and the opening of the door of luminosity. Later, from Yongzin Chokyi Lodro, the great translator Ratna Bhadra, Jamgon Kunga Drolchok, Dushyapa Chodar Drakpa, Lopa Chenpo Chokyi Drakpa, and others, he mainly studied the Shangpa teachings, Lamdre, Kalachakra, and other profound and extensive teachings, like an ocean. He also learned common sciences such as grammar and poetics from the great translator Geshe Namgyal and the interpreter Rabtshe Dawa, and ultimately perfected the results of listening, contemplating, and meditating. With the nectar of teaching, debating, and writing, he opened the lotus of the fortunate ones' hearts, thereby causing the complete Shakya teachings, the Utpala flower forest, to flourish greatly, and he went to the great holy site of the Dharma of the lineage holders.
