Later, the Yab Chos Sdings and Sgo Mo Chos Sdings monasteries, founded by Kyes mchog bsam gtan dpal, became very famous. The term "Chod" (གཅོད།) refers to cutting off karma with relative bodhicitta and cutting off afflictions with ultimate bodhicitta, and incidentally cutting off the four maras. Alternatively, it is so called because it is practiced as the method of practice of the bodhisattvas—the path of skillful means and wisdom. This is in accordance with the Prajnaparamita Sutra and the Mantras. The source of this teaching is the general aspects of Prajna, and in particular, the Abhisamayalankara. The reason is: "Because of the four, the bodhisattva is endowed with wisdom and power. The four maras are difficult to conquer and cannot be moved. Abiding in emptiness, not abandoning sentient beings, acting as spoken, having the blessings of the Sugata." This means abiding in emptiness, that is, meditating on emptiness. Not abandoning sentient beings, that is, meditating on loving-kindness and compassion—relative bodhicitta. These two are the actual practice of pacification and cutting. Acting as spoken is the root of the path—relying on a spiritual friend. The blessings of the Sugata are refuge, bodhicitta, the seven-branch offering, mandala, etc., which are the preliminaries. The difficulty of conquering the four maras is the ultimate degree of cutting. In accordance with the Mantras, the Second Examination Tantra says: "Under a tree, in a cemetery, in the house of a mother ghost, at night, or in a solitary remote place, one should proclaim good meditation." It also says: "Having given the offering of the body, one should practice correct conduct from the outside." It also says: "Even if it is certain that non-gods and Indra-like beings will appear beforehand, one should not be afraid of them, but should act with the form of a lion." Therefore, it explains in detail the place where one practices, the path of how to cut, and the manner in which the result, requests, and appearances occur. Furthermore, starting from the Teacher Shakyamuni Buddha, it was transmitted to Manjushri, Ārla de va, Dampa, and from there to Yar klung sma ra ser po, which is the Father Chod. From Skyo ston bsod nams bla ma, it was transmitted to Machig Labdrön (མ་གཅིག), from whom twenty-one male and female accomplished ones and eighteen accomplished daughters appeared. It was widely propagated by Khu sgam chos seng, who is known as one of the four great disciples. This is the Terma that appeared from the Kama Kagyu and Northern Treasures, as well as the teachings given by Manjushri to Tsongkhapa, the teachings of the Gyaltang tradition, the oral transmission of Thangtong Gyalpo, the Drung Chod of Zurmang, the teachings of the Charu tradition, etc., most of which are pure appearance teachings, that is, all three of Kama, Terma, and pure appearance.
