Etc., acted like daytime. The main lineage known as Mahamudra is: Jetsun Marpa Lotsawa entrusted the teachings of the practice lineage to Mila Repa, the common ancestor of hundreds of accomplished beings in the Land of Snows. His disciple, like the sun, Dagpo Lhaje, after being satisfied with the nectar of the Kadampa, entered the lineage of Mahamudra and attained accomplishment. Among Dagpo Lhaje's disciples, there were those known as the "Three Men of Kham": Düsum Khyenpa (the First Karmapa) founded the Karma Kamtsang; from Phagmo Drupa, the Drukpa Kagyu, Taklung Kagyu, Babrom Kagyu, and Tropu Kagyu lineages branched out; and from Gomtsul's disciple Zhang Rinpoche, the Tsalpa Kagyu was founded, making every valley in the Land of Snows beautiful to behold. In particular, the activities of the glorious Drukpa Kagyu spread as vast as the sky. Furthermore, like the moon, from Rechung Dorje Drakpa came the Rechung Nyengyu, and from Ngendzong Tonpa Bodhiraja came what is known as the Ngendzong Nyengyu, and so on. The Shangpa Kagyu lineage is: The wisdom dakini Niguma, embodying all the mandalas of the five tantra classes, took the accomplished scholar Kyungpo Tseten Gon as her disciple. He then passed it on to Mogchokpa Rinchen, Kyer Gangpa Choseng, and up to Drogon Sangye Tonpa, maintaining a single lineage, which was called the "Seven Precious Lineages." After that, the five precepts and so on were widely propagated, flourishing greatly in Ü-Tsang, especially in Jak Sam and Shang, Nyang, and other places. What is known as the Zhi byed (Pacification) lineage is: Taken care of by thirty-six extraordinary lineage lamas and twelve Sugatas, the accomplished master Dampa Sangye, with compassion, came to Tibet many times. Initially, there were Angpo Lotsawa and others; in the middle, the three Gedunpa of Rma, So, and Kam; and finally, it was spread to the seven great disciples such as Dampa Kunga, Phyarchen, and Phyarchung, and thus it greatly flourished. After that, relying on the lineage's instructions, the Chö practice, which is said to be opened by one's own power, relies on the flesh form of the great mother, and Machig Labdrön widely propagated it, thus spreading to almost all sects. These are not separate instructions of Sutra and Tantra; for example, in the Lamdré (Path and Result) it is said: This is the essence of meaning extracted from all the Buddha's teachings, both Sutras and Tantras.

Thus, through the preliminary three appearances, it guides the path of the four empowerments of all unsurpassed yogas, and through the main practice, the three continuums. Similarly, Mahamudra is generally a practice of the Mantrayana tradition, but in order to introduce the view of Prajnaparamita to disciples of dull faculties, it is taught under the name of Mahamudra, and so on. The Lamrim of the Three Persons, which summarizes all the essential points of practice in the Sutra tradition, originated from the supreme master Dipamkara, the jewel on the crown of the five hundred Panditas. At that time, Lhatsun Jangchub Ö (Bodhi Light) sent Naktsowa Tsultrim Gyalwa (Discipline Victory) as an envoy to urge Jowo-je (Atisha) to come to the sacred field of merit in the snowy land. He came as requested, and although the genuine Dharma had appeared before, it had been defiled by some impurities of confusion in the meantime. He cleared away these impurities and made the entire cool region like daytime. Although his disciples were countless, the three, Khu, Ngok, and Drom, were the main ones. Among them, Dromtonpa appeared as father and son in many lifetimes, becoming his only heart-son. His disciples, known as the three brothers, namely Jamyang (Manjushri) emanation Potowa Rinchen Sel, who listened to and taught the six treatises of the Kadampa, were therefore called "The Treatise School"; Phagdor (Vajrapani) emanation Phuchungwa Shyönnu Gyaltsen, who mainly practiced and taught the essential instructions on the Four Noble Truths, was therefore called "The Instructions School"; and Chenrezig (Avalokiteshvara) emanation Chennga Tsultrim Bar, who greatly propagated the Lamrim of the Three Persons, was therefore called "The Precepts School." In addition to Naktsowa and the other eight main disciples of Jowo (Atisha), and the two close disciples, totaling ten, the lineage came from Rongpa Chyasorwa, from which the Naktsowa Kagyu, also known as "Lower Kadampa," arose. From then on, the great stream of activity burst forth and spread throughout the snowy land. However, it later merged into all the traditions and could not be distinguished separately. Nevertheless, Shar Tsongkhapa Lo Sang Drakpa, who wandered in the form of a young Manjushri, from the teachings of the common Sutra tradition, with Jowo (Atisha) and his spiritual sons as models, established the tradition of the Extensive Practice, as well as the tradition of the Profound Emptiness. In the unsurpassed Yoga Tantra, he took the noble Nagarjuna and his spiritual sons as the standard, and through explaining, debating, and writing, as well as the practice of hearing, contemplating, and meditating, he revived the Buddhist teachings.
