Therefore, thinking that these beings are able to avert harm and accomplish benefit, they are truly as kind as a mountain. How wonderful it would be if they could have temporary and ultimate happiness! May I bring them happiness, with such loving-kindness. These beings, although they desire happiness, are full of suffering: hells have the suffering of heat and cold, hungry ghosts have the suffering of hunger and thirst, animals have the suffering of eating each other, and so on; humans have the suffering of birth, old age, sickness, and death, and so on; asuras have the suffering of fighting, and so on; gods of the desire realm have the suffering of the signs of death, and so on, unimaginable suffering. Even the higher realms will fall from their states and be born in hells, and so on, so that no one escapes suffering. As it says in the Sutra on the Establishment of Mindfulness: "Sentient beings in hell are harmed by hellfire. Hungry ghosts are harmed by hunger and thirst. Animals are harmed by eating each other. Humans are harmed by short lives. Gods are harmed by carelessness. Samsara is like the tip of a needle. There is never any happiness." Furthermore, the sutra says: "The desire realm is also flawed. The form realm is also flawed. Likewise, the formless realm is also flawed." The Vinaya-lung says: "Due to the power of craving, existence, and ignorance, beings are divided into three types: humans, gods, and the three lower realms. The unskilled wander in the five realms, like a potter's wheel turning. The three realms burn with the suffering of old age and sickness. Here, the fire of death blazes fiercely, without protector or refuge. Born from existence, beings are always deluded, like a bee trapped in a vase, spinning around." In short, no matter where one is born in the three realms and six realms, one is always tormented by the suffering of suffering, the suffering of change, and the pervasive suffering of conditioning. These sentient beings, although they want to be liberated from suffering, are bound by the strong bonds of karma and afflictions. They are not guided by virtuous friends. They are separated from good friends who lead to liberation. They have not become objects to be tamed by the noble ones. Therefore, there is no way to be liberated from suffering. How pitiful! Think of all the suffering of sentient beings as if it has fallen upon yourself. How wonderful it would be if these beings could be free from all suffering and its causes!

Alright. I will cultivate intense compassion, thinking that I should free them from suffering. Thus, the burden of bringing them happiness and liberating them from all suffering falls upon me. Although I long to do so, I do not have the power to do so now. Not only do I not have the power, but even Brahma and Indra, who are greater than me, and even Shravaka Pratyekabuddha Arhats, who are greater than them, do not have the power. So who has the power? Only the perfect Buddha, who perfectly possesses the two benefits, has the power, so I should attain Buddhahood. The main cause for attaining Buddhahood is the arising of Bodhicitta, so I should generate Bodhicitta. Having generated Bodhicitta, by training in the precepts of the Bodhisattvas, I will definitely attain Buddhahood. Having attained Buddhahood, I will liberate all sentient beings from the river of suffering, liberate them from the bonds of karma and afflictions, temporarily relieve their suffering, and ultimately lead them away from sorrow. Thinking in this way, I visualize that in the sky in front of me, the Great Sage and countless Buddhas and Bodhisattvas are actually present, and with devotion, I request them to listen. When I say this, I strongly think that they will surely look upon me with wisdom and compassion. Kneeling with my right knee on the ground or squatting, with my palms together, keeping the meaning in mind, and with one-pointed mind, I need to recite these words three times to generate Bodhicitta, so please allow me to begin the first recitation. To all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas abiding in the ten directions, please listen to me. Teacher, please listen to me. Each reciting their own name, I, named so-and-so, in this life and in other lives, whatever roots of virtue of the nature of generosity, the nature of ethics, and the nature of meditation that I have done, and that I have caused to be done, and that I have rejoiced in, just as the Buddhas, Arhats, and Perfectly Awakened Buddhas of the past, and the Bodhisattva Mahasattvas who dwell on the great earth, have generated the mind of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, so too, I, named so-and-so, from this time until the essence of enlightenment
