The external coarse objects that are the nature of aggregated atoms, and the objects of the continuum of consciousness, are considered to be nominally existent conventional truth. And because they consider the apprehended indivisible atoms and the momentary indivisible consciousness to be substantially existent ultimate truth, they have not completely abandoned the self of phenomena, both the apprehended and the apprehender. Although the Sautrāntikas consider the three—form, mind, and mental factors—to be true, except for non-cognitive form, non-cognitive form is indestructible, and non-associated compositional factors are merely imputed to the states of form, mind, and mental factors, and there is no other substance. And because the unconditioned is not produced by causes and conditions, they do not consider these to be substances, so they are superior because they realize one aspect of the realm of phenomena to be without self. In any case, refuting their assertion that the apprehended external objects, which are imputed by them, are indivisible atoms: Does it exist in one place, or in many places? If it exists in one place, is there a distinction of directional parts, or not? If there is, then it is divided into four directions, above and below, that is, into six parts, so the assertion of an indivisible atom is broken. If not, then all objects would become one atom, so it would not be possible to construct coarse objects. If you say it exists in many places, since one atom, which is the basis of construction, is not established, then the many atoms constructed by it will also not be established. Then, what are these manifest appearances of form, etc.? They arise due to the power of mental delusion, like the appearances of a dream, and in reality, they are not established as true. As it says in the Avataṃsaka Sūtra: "O sons of the Victorious Ones, these three realms are only mind." Because of this, and also because of the reasoning: "Because one object is perceived differently by different minds, the object is not established." And so on, it is extensively explained. Second, establishing that the apprehender is without inherent existence. In general, the Mind-Only proponents divide all phenomena into the object of complete imputation, the object-possessing dependent arising, and the non-dual nature of perfect establishment, and establish them as three characteristics. And they consider the former two to be conventional truth, and the latter to be ultimate truth. In particular, the proponents of true aspect Mind-Only, as mentioned earlier, although they do not establish external objects as true, refute their assertion that the consciousness of the appearance of objects is truly established: If the apprehended object is not established, then the apprehending consciousness is also not established as true, just like the appearance of a dream, and the one who experiences the dream.

It is just like both kinds of knowledge awaken but nothing is accomplished. After thoroughly examining this and establishing its lack of reality, those false consciousnesses are also considered to be empty of both grasper and grasped, with only the self-knowing and self-illuminating awareness appearing as real. However, this is not reasonable. If such a dualistic-appearing consciousness exists, does it exist as one or as many? If it exists as one, does it have the components of the three times—past, present, and future? If it does, then it cannot be established as one because it would become many; if it does not, then it would become a non-entity. If it is said to exist as many, then since the foundational one is not established, the many composed of it are also not established. If neither one nor many exists, then it is because non-existence pervades all. Furthermore, the past mind has perished, so it cannot be a thing; the future mind has not yet arisen, so it cannot be a thing; the present mind is not established as color and shape, it transcends one and many, and it does not abide anywhere inside or outside the body. Since nothing is found when searched for, it is not established as real. In short, it is separated from the three—arising, ceasing, and abiding—like space. Having thoroughly examined this, liberation from the extreme of permanence is the elimination of the extreme of nihilism. So, is the absence of mind itself the reality? That is not the case either. If the mind previously existed as a thing and later became non-existent, then it could become a non-entity, but since it has never existed, the negation of it is also not established. Transcending both existence and non-existence, both extremes are not established. Since these two extremes are not established, the non-duality that negates both is also not established. Therefore, realizing from the beginning that the nature of mind is free from the elaboration of the four extremes is the view of the Svatantrika Madhyamikas. In the Essence of Wisdom, Collected from All, it says: Not existent, not non-existent, not both existent and non-existent, Nor is it the nature of both. The supreme path of liberation from the four extremes, Is known as the collection of Madhyamika reasoning. Finally, holding onto freedom from elaboration is also not considered the reality, because the four extremes to be refuted are not established individually. Therefore, the negation of them, the so-called freedom from extremes, is also not established in meaning. Being free from all assertions is the way of abiding in the thought of the Prasangika Madhyamikas, who have become the pinnacle of those who assert the tenets of Buddhist philosophy. The noble Nagarjuna said: Because I have no thesis, I am without fault alone.
