From the 'Adornment of the Vinaya': 'Defeat, arising, increasing, definitely arising and the individual, establishing and well distinguishing, for the sake of definite ascertainment, is indeed the Vinaya.' Similarly, the Sutra Pitaka primarily teaches the higher training in mind. As previously stated: 'For the sake of places and characteristics, and for speaking of the meaning of the Dharma, it is the Sutra.' Similarly, the Abhidhamma Pitaka primarily teaches the higher training in wisdom. As previously stated: 'For the sake of manifestation and repeatedly, and for subduing realization, it is the Dharma of Abhidhamma.' Secondly, like this, our supreme teacher, the perfect Buddha Sarvarthasiddha, not long after manifesting the essence of enlightenment at the Vajrasana, in the Deer Park of the Rishi's Fall in Varanasi, to all the Shravaka assemblies represented by the five excellent groups, taught the first turning of the wheel of Dharma, the ascertainment of the four truths, and the immeasurable Vinaya Pitaka, such as the four Agamas. At Vulture Peak Mountain, to those of the Mahayana lineage such as Brahma, he taught the intermediate turning of the wheel of Dharma, the wheel of Dharma without characteristics that shows the meaning of the three doors of liberation, the 'Perfection of Wisdom in One Hundred Thousand Lines,' and so on, and the inconceivable Sutra Pitaka. In uncertain places, to the various kinds of disciples to be tamed, he established all dharmas as three characteristics, and taught the final turning of the wheel of Dharma, the immeasurable wheel of Dharma that is well distinguished. If these are divided into categories, there are nine. First, in the Vinaya, the Vinaya of the Vinaya, which is the establishment and classification of nature, and the determination of reasoning; the Sutra of the Vinaya, which is the yoga of mastering the stages of concentration and pure conduct; the Abhidhamma of the Vinaya, which extensively teaches the ascertainment of these. Second, in the Sutra, the Vinaya of the Sutra, which is the classification of the precepts of the Bodhisattva; the Sutra of the Sutra, which is the practice of profound and vast concentration; the Abhidhamma of the Sutra, which subtly shows the classification of the path, dharani, and concentration, etc. Third, in the Abhidhamma, the Vinaya of the Abhidhamma, which is the order of taming afflictions by grasping with small means; the Sutra of the Abhidhamma, which is profound

It teaches the meaning of single-mindedly engaging in the meaning. It is the manifestation of manifestation, the reality of the Tathagatagarbha of perfect accomplishment, and the profound and vast aspects of the aggregates, realms, and sources. In short, it is to abandon three things, practice three things, and know three things. First, in order to abandon the two extremes of fatigue and desire for merit, the Vinaya Pitaka was established. Similarly, in order to counteract the root afflictions and doubts, it was explained in the Abhidhamma Pitaka. Second, Vasubandhu said: The Sutra Pitaka explains all three trainings. The Vinaya Pitaka is to cultivate the mind through higher discipline, because those who possess discipline will gradually attain samadhi, such as non-regret. The Abhidhamma Pitaka is to cultivate higher wisdom, because it is to explain the meaning without distortion. Thus he said. Third, he himself said: The Sutra Pitaka explains the Dharma and meaning. The Vinaya Pitaka is to accomplish the Dharma and meaning, because by diligently subduing afflictions, one can realize both. The Abhidhamma Pitaka is skilled in distinguishing eloquent speech. Thus he said, so it can be understood. Third, regarding the division of individual vehicles, as mentioned before, the general numerical divisions are inconceivable, but here, temporarily following the view of the Nyingma Dzogchen, dividing the vehicles into nine stages, making a slight determination, in the Great Array it says: The small three vehicles refer to: those who grasp at characteristics are Shravakas, those who have fabrication are Pratyekabuddhas, those who have conceptual entry are Bodhisattvas. The middle three vehicles refer to: the extremely inferior is the Kriya, the inferior is the Charya, those who have consciousness are the Yoga. The great three vehicles refer to: those with vast minds are the generation stage, those with essential minds are the completion stage, the supreme secret itself is the Great Perfection. As it is said. First, for the Shravaka vehicle, Again: view, meditation, conduct, and result. The first is further divided into the Sarvastivadins and the Sautrantikas. The first is: believing that all dharmas are pervaded by the two, defiled and undefiled, thus all that is included in the five aggregates is defiled, because it is a destructible group.
