It is said thus. Furthermore, as stated in the Sutra of the Ten Wheels of Earth Essence: If one cannot understand the movement of breath in and out through the power of mindfulness, exactly as it is, then how? One can understand by counting the breaths (Tibetan: བགྲང་, Sanskrit Devanagari: गणना, Sanskrit Romanization: gaṇanā, Chinese literal meaning: counting)1, following the breaths (Tibetan: རྗེས་སུ་འགྲོ་, Sanskrit Devanagari: अनुगमन, Sanskrit Romanization: anugamana, Chinese literal meaning: following)2, calming the mind (Tibetan: ཞི་གནས་, Sanskrit Devanagari: शमथ, Sanskrit Romanization: śamatha, Chinese literal meaning: tranquility)3, insight (Tibetan: ལྷག་མཐོང་, Sanskrit Devanagari: विपश्यना, Sanskrit Romanization: vipaśyanā, Chinese literal meaning: superior seeing)4, entering (Tibetan: འཇུག་པ་, Sanskrit Devanagari: प्रवेश, Sanskrit Romanization: praveśa, Chinese literal meaning: entering)5, and complete purification (Tibetan: ཡོངས་སུ་དག་པ་, Sanskrit Devanagari: परिशुद्धि, Sanskrit Romanization: pariśuddhi, Chinese literal meaning: complete purification)6. Among these, counting the breaths 1 will cause the object of action to become twofold, because it becomes the basis, it can subdue both conceptualization and analysis, so it can hold the characteristic of the movement of breath in and out. Following the breaths will also cause the object of action to become twofold, relying on true arising, being free from conceptualization, and becoming skilled in the nature of entering the movement of breath in and out. Calming the mind 2 will also cause the object of action to become twofold, manifesting the decrease of the movement of breath in and out, and being able to abide in the supreme samadhi. Insight will also cause the object of action to become twofold, manifesting the cessation of the movement of breath in and out, and abiding in the individual understanding of mind and mental phenomena. Entering will also cause the object of action to become twofold, being skilled in the practice of abandoning the aggregates of grasping, and practicing entering the noble state. Complete purification will also cause the object of action to become twofold, abandoning all defilements, and completely purifying the view. Thus it is said. Furthermore, as stated in the scriptures: How is it that the mind, which is said to be extremely difficult to tame, is not perceived as separate from the wind, therefore the mind is called wind, that is for sure. Secondly, the antidote to desire is to contemplate a skeleton, because it is said: For all those who are attached to skeletons. How to contemplate? Contemplating the bones up to the ocean, expanding and contracting is the first practice. From the foot bones to half of the skull, letting go is said to be purification. Holding the mind between the eyebrows is the completion of mindfulness. Thus, it is said in sequence. Furthermore, children mostly crave colors, shapes, soft touches, and

Attachment to reverence and offerings. To counteract these, one should contemplate the colors of corpses, such as bluish-purple, turning red, and decaying; contemplate the shapes of corpses, such as festering, being eaten, and scattering; contemplate being worm-eaten, bones connected by tendons, etc., to eliminate attachment to smooth tactile sensations. Contemplate the swaying of a swollen corpse, like an empty bladder blown by the wind, contemplate it being like a stone, devoid of reverence and offerings, to eliminate attachment to reverence and offerings such as washing feet. Furthermore, if explained separately, if attached to colors like blue lotus flowers, one should contemplate bluish-purple. Similarly, if attached to a body smeared with fragrances like sandalwood, one should contemplate festering. If attached to the tactile sensation of intercourse, one should contemplate being worm-eaten. If attached to perfect shape, one should contemplate swelling. If attached to a body adorned with ornaments, one should contemplate turning red. If attached to a body with plump flesh, one should contemplate being eaten. If attached to playfulness such as embracing and kissing, one should contemplate scattering. If attached to perfect color and shape, one should contemplate decaying. If attached to white teeth, one should contemplate bones, and thus attachment will be pacified. These are called the nine contemplations of unattractiveness. Third, one should cultivate loving-kindness as an antidote to hatred. That is, first contemplate one's own mother, father, son, daughter, or any one of two close relatives, wishing that they may encounter all happiness, and wishing that I may encounter them. If capable, actually help them, and when encountering them, cultivate respectfully for a few days without jealousy. Then gradually towards those who are slightly less close, then towards neutral people, inferior enemies, intermediate enemies, and difficult enemies. When one attains loving-kindness towards these people equal to that towards one's mother, then towards villages and cities, then towards countries and regions, from one continent and two continents, etc., to the small thousand world, the intermediate thousand world, the great thousand world, and the ten directions of the world, worlds as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, fill them with loving-kindness. Then, in the same way, wish that they may be free from suffering, and rejoice in their freedom from suffering, and lead them to the path of liberation beyond the world. In this order, cultivate loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity.
