Focusing the mind on the elements, without manifesting any fabrication, but relaxing body and mind, counting from one to ten with just mindfulness. Because of the fear of the mind being too concentrated or scattered, do not count too much or too little. There are three faults in this: one is counting one as two, etc., which is excessive; two is grasping two as one, which is insufficient; and three is mistaking inhalation for exhalation, etc., which is confusion, and these should be abandoned. If the mind is scattered in between, one should start counting again from the beginning until samadhi arises. The second is following: When does the breath come in or go out? Are these breaths pervading the whole body, or are they moving from one part? Without manifesting any fabrication, follow the breath as it goes in and out. When it enters, follow it in sequence as it enters the collarbone, heart, navel, waist, thigh, buttocks, until between the two feet. When the breath goes out, it goes out to the distance of one cubit or one fathom. Others say that the breath stops between the wheel of wind and the wind that scatters. But this is not reasonable because it is for the sake of truly focusing the mind. The third is abiding: Like a string of jewels, contemplate the breath abiding from the tip of the nose to the toes, and contemplate whether this breath is beneficial or harmful to oneself? Is it cold or hot? The fourth is close observation: These are not just breaths, but also the four great elements, and the form that is manifested by these elements, and the consciousness and mental factors that depend on these elements, and this is the close observation of the five aggregates. The fifth is transforming: Focusing on the breath, transform the mind, from one higher state to another higher state, completely combining the roots of virtue, until reaching the highest Dharma. Completely pure means entering the path of seeing, etc. Others say that transforming is from abiding in mindfulness to vajra-like samadhi, and the sixth is completely pure, which means attaining the knowledge of exhaustion, etc. This is following the view of Master Vasubandhu.
