The reason for non-apprehension is explained. That is, the first phrase "I" etc. in the previous statement explains the reason for the non-apprehension of what is apparent. For example, in a place devoid of a pot, there is no pot, because it is not apprehended by a valid means of cognition that is capable of perceiving it. The latter part, "person" etc., explains the reason for the non-apprehension of what is invisible, but the object to be proven is not necessarily non-existent. For those extremely obscure aeon-related matters that cannot be proven to exist by direct perception, scripture, or other signs, if things are that way, then the term "definite existence" which corresponds to reality cannot be applied. Generally speaking, although it may exist, since that person cannot ascertain its existence or non-existence through direct perception or subsequent valid cognition, the aforementioned pervasion is established. A sign that has the characteristic of "if it does not exist, it will not occur" is the basis for inference. In the conclusion of the second chapter of the Commentary on Valid Cognition (Pramanavarttika), it says: "That which does not arise if it does not exist, is the sign that is the basis of inference." Such a system of epistemology is said to have appeared even in the teachings of Buddha Dipankara 20,000 years ago. However, our own system of teachings does not seem to have appeared earlier than the work Tarkajvala (Flame of Reasoning). Although in India, there is doubt as to whether Master Vasubandhu composed it, in reality, I think it was not written by the younger brother of Asanga. Some think that the statement in the Abhidharma Seven Treatises, "The Treatise on Differentiation by Vasubandhu," refers to him. The non-Buddhist logicians initially had the sage Purana compose treatises on the absence of past and future lives. Later, in Jambudvipa, a sage named Lokacaksu (Eye of the World) composed the Pramanasutra (Sutra on Valid Cognition). It is said that the sage Praptabala (Possessing Strength) wrote a commentary on that sutra and developed it. This account comes from the Avalokitesvara-vrata-vyakhya (Explanation of the Vow of Avalokitesvara). The proponents of permanence are the Samkhya school, which is the treatise that explains the twenty-five realities. Regarding these, the Pramanasutra says: "If one leads to the nature of reality through logic, that is the destruction of the Sugata's teaching, therefore, one should examine the nature of the Tathagata, and if it is different, then it should be investigated." There are similar statements in the Pramanavarttika. Atisha said: "Direct perception and inference are not needed." This also refers to those non-Buddhist logics that are in agreement with this view. Secondly, in the Kalacakra...

As it is said, "The elephant of direction, with a pure thought of benefiting others, is like the sprout of a lunar lotus," and so on. He is a disciple of Master Vasubandhu, prophesied in many sutras and tantras. Dignāga, who was more skilled in epistemology than himself, was known as the Prajñāpāramitā Liberation Section, the Vinaya Guṇaprabha, and the Abhidharma Buddhadāsa. In the Compendium on Valid Cognition and the Mañjuśrīmūlatantra, it says, "The letter dhā, meaning the diligent one, will be renowned in the southern direction. Having repelled opposing debaters, that diligent one will also accomplish mantras." Dharmakīrti, born into a Brahmin family as prophesied, listened to the Compendium three times from Īśvarasena, a student of Dignāga and an opponent, and understood its meaning as it was. He defeated many external opponents.
