Invoking the Earth. The Blessed One said to the venerable Ānanda: "Ānanda, well done, well done! Ānanda, you ask, if someone builds a tiered house like that and offers it to the Saṃgha of monks from the four directions; and someone places relics of the Tathāgata, after his complete Nirvāṇa, as small as a mustard seed, inside a stupa's vase, the vase as big as an Emblic myrobalan, erects a life-tree as thin as a needle, and hangs an umbrella as big as a juniper leaf; or makes an image of the Tathāgata, as tall as a span. Which of these two accumulates more merit? Your question is good, your courage is commendable, and your consideration is excellent! Ānanda, therefore, listen well and pay close attention, and I will explain. Ānanda, if someone builds a tiered house like that and offers it to the Saṃgha of monks from the four directions; and someone places relics of the Tathāgata, after his complete Nirvāṇa, as small as a mustard seed, inside a stupa's vase, the vase as big as an Emblic myrobalan, erects a life-tree as thin as a needle, and hangs an umbrella as big as a juniper leaf; or makes an image of the Tathāgata as tall as a span. Ānanda, the former merit does not even approach one percent of the latter merit, nor one thousandth, nor one hundred thousandth, nor in number or part, nor in simile or cause. Why is that? Because the Tathāgatas, Arhats, Perfectly Awakened Buddhas, possess such immeasurable qualities, possessing immeasurable discipline, immeasurable samādhi, immeasurable wisdom, immeasurable liberation, and immeasurable knowledge and vision of liberation. Ānanda, if Jambudvīpa, which is seven thousand yojanas in width and length, is filled with Stream-enterers, Once-returners, Non-returners, Arhats, and Pratyekabuddhas, like a field of rice, a field of sesame, a bamboo grove, a reed thicket, or a sugarcane grove, and if someone offers them robes for as long as they live,

Clothing, food, bedding, medicine for illnesses, and whatever tools they desire are given to them. After all of them have completely passed into nirvana, a stupa is built. It is worshipped with umbrellas, bells, banners, incense, perfumes, garlands, powders, and ointments. If someone places a relic of the Tathagata, the Arhat, who has completely passed into nirvana, as small as a mustard seed, inside a stupa vase as small as an amla fruit, and inserts a life-tree as thin as a needle, and attaches an umbrella as large as a juniper leaf, or makes an image of the Tathagata as small as a finger joint, Ananda, this merit is not even close to the previous merit by a hundredth part, a thousandth part, a millionth part, in number, proportion, analogy, or cause. Why is that? Because the Tathagatas, the Arhats, the perfectly enlightened Buddhas, possess such immeasurable qualities as these: immeasurable discipline, immeasurable concentration, immeasurable wisdom, immeasurable liberation, and immeasurable knowledge and vision of liberation. Ananda, the eastern continent of Videha, which is eight thousand yojanas in width and length, is filled with those who have entered the stream. From here until the knowledge and vision of liberation, it should be described in detail as before. Ananda, the western continent of Godaniya, which is nine thousand yojanas in width and length, is filled with those who have entered the stream. From here, it should be elaborated as before. Ananda, the northern continent of Uttarakuru, which is ten thousand yojanas in width, is filled with those who have entered the stream. From here, it should be elaborated as before. Ananda, the palace of Indra, the king of the gods, called the 'Victorious Banner,' has eighty-four thousand very stable pillars. All of those pillars are made of blue lapis lazuli of the gods. Ananda, the Victorious Banner palace is covered with golden sand, sprinkled with sandalwood water, covered with a golden net, and surrounded by golden bells that jingle.
