will transform. Discrimination is a great delusion, the cause of falling into the ocean of samsara. If one abides in non-discriminating samadhi, one will become as immaculate as the sky. Thus and so forth, (the scriptures) repeatedly proclaim what should be abandoned and the antidotes for abandoning them. In the 'Tantra of Manifest Enlightenment of Vairocana,' it is also said that discrimination and so forth should be abandoned, as follows: Discrimination is the cause of suffering; as long as it is not abandoned, one is not a Buddha in this world, nor can one be called omniscient. Also, in the 'Sambuti Tantra,' it says: Ignorance, attachment, hatred, pride, and jealousy, these five afflictions, bind each sentient being; only self-awareness can destroy them. It is these that bind sentient beings in the six realms, causing them to wander in samsara, constantly taking birth. Bewildered by afflictions, one will commit many sins. Therefore, destroying these afflictions will accomplish omniscience. And, completely abandoning all discrimination, (one will obtain) the accumulation of all-knowing wisdom; I prostrate and praise the wisdom body. And, having generated equanimity, one should distance oneself from desire and so forth. In the glorious Vajra Garland Tantra, it is also said: For the sake of counteracting unfavorable factors, the practice of emptiness is fully proclaimed. Such is the distinction of emptiness; for the sake of counteracting habitual tendencies, the unfavorable aspects of all things should be known from the lineage of the guru. Thus and so forth. Similarly, before the mind of enlightenment becomes immovably stable, it is also proclaimed that action seals and so forth should be abandoned. In the 'Root Tantra of the First Buddha,' it says: Abandon the examined action seal and the wisdom seal, and with the supreme, unchanging union, practice the Great Seal. And, in the condensed tantra of the same, it also says: The mind is defiled, this action seal and the examined wisdom seal should be abandoned. Thus and so forth. In the glorious Supreme Offering, it is also said: Abandoning the undiminished bliss of the ash-covered woman, and cherishing a useless young girl, most are

By what kind of intensely accumulated karma of the past, does one abandon nectar and drink poison? This saying is also quoted in the Great Commentary of Naropa. Also, in the great Chinese commentary "Stainless Light": Completely abandon the karma mudra, completely renounce the wisdom mudra, truly arise from the great mudra, not accompanied by the co-emergent other, transcending the meditation of conceptual thoughts, the unchanging bliss of the great mudra, the object and subject, shapes, etc., completely renounce conceptual thoughts and speech. And so on. Not depending on these is approaching, completely abandoning attachment to body and possessions. Here, the gods will grant the supreme, but not because of attachment to the enjoyment of existence. Therefore, what is called "mara" is the defilement of the habitual tendencies of the minds of sentient beings in samsara. What is called "Buddha" is the mind that is free from the habitual tendencies of samsara. Thus it is also said, the Bhagavan said in the Prajnaparamita: The mind that exists, that mind is not a mind. Thus it is proclaimed as naturally luminous, that is, free from the habitual tendencies of samsara. Therefore, mara is the mind with defilements, and Buddha is the mind without defilements. As it is said, the defilements of the habitual tendencies of the mind of samsara are all maras, so they should be abandoned. As it is said: When there is mara, that moment does not turn into Buddha, because the mind is defiled. When the moment is Buddha, there is no mara in that moment, because all defilements have been exhausted. Therefore, the maras of the body, speech, and mind of sentient beings and the habitual tendencies of ignorance are the four maras. The cause of the body, speech, mind, and ignorance maras mentioned earlier is the moment of transformation, appearing as the desire gods. That is subdued by the Tathagata with the supreme unchanging moment. That subduing is subduing the army of maras, attachment, hatred, delusion, and anger, and the nature of ignorance are all extinguished. Thus, the body, speech, mind, and habitual tendencies of ignorance of sentient beings are all defilements.
