Those who know, the wise ones, are told that they will not completely degenerate. As it is said, in the Sutra Unraveling of Intent, "All dharmas are without self-nature, all dharmas are unborn, all dharmas are unceasing, all dharmas are primordially peaceful, all dharmas are by nature nirvana. Without deep meaning, who would say this? Self-nature is without self-nature, birth is without self-nature, ultimate reality is without self-nature, I have said. Whichever wise one knows this deep meaning, he will not go on the path of complete degeneration." And also, the venerable Asanga said, "From the extremely vast perspective, all dharmas are without self-nature." If asked, what is the deep meaning of this? Because it does not arise from itself, is not its own self-nature, does not abide in its own essence, and because it is without characteristics, like that which is grasped by children. Furthermore, on the self-nature of the completely imputed, there is characteristic without self-nature; on the dependent, there is birth without self-nature; on the thoroughly established, there is ultimate reality without self-nature. Thus it is said. The venerable Maitreya also said the same, that non-self-nature has three ways of being without, and if summarized, there are two ways of being without self-nature, namely, the absence of one's own essence is conventional truth, and the absence of the essence of others is ultimate truth. This is also the meaning of the previously shown conventional self-emptiness and ultimate other-emptiness. If one understands the way of being without self-nature in this way, one will not fall into the extremes of existence and non-existence, and therefore will not degenerate from the Middle Way. If, as some people think, one asserts that everything is without self-nature, then one will fall into the extreme of non-existence, and therefore it is said that one will degenerate from the Middle Way. Therefore, the alaya consciousness pervades the object to be purified, but the object to be purified does not pervade the part of the alaya consciousness that has become the basis of purification. Saying this is also contrary to the scriptures, because understanding the object to be purified and the alaya consciousness, the wisdom dharmadhatu, as the same meaning is completely the fault of being separated from the profound pith instructions. Furthermore, you say that there are many contradictions in the many examples of objects to be purified and agents of purification that we have listed, this is because you do not understand the way of combining the similar qualities of examples and meanings. If it were not so, then the sutras and treatises

From many pure lands, the sudden appearance of defilements, and the many examples and meanings of the Tathagatagarbha, do these also have many internal contradictions? We have only recorded the meaning of the sutras and shastras as they are. If you look at the previously mentioned Tathagatagarbha Sutra and the Uttaratantra Shastra, etc., it will be clear. Furthermore, in your letter, it is written: "The object to be purified and the means of purification are like darkness and light, so the attainment of purification is from the perspective of negation, not from the perspective of nature, essence, or part. Because in essence or nature, darkness and light do not exist. There is no one who believes that negation and difference do not exist." And so on. To these, we will respond by making distinctions. Regarding the statement that darkness and light, and the object to be purified and the means of purification, do not have essence, does this mean that they do not have essence in the ultimate sense, or that they do not have essence in the conventional sense? If according to the first case, then darkness and light, and all objects to be purified and means of purification, are like flowers in the sky in the ultimate sense, and do not exist at all. Therefore, they cannot be established even by differences of negation. If according to the second case, then darkness and light, and the object to be purified and the means of purification, would be too extreme, because they are not truths of the conventional level. Because even merely in the conventional sense, essence does not exist at all. This argument is accepted. It cannot be asserted, because even in the truth of the conventional level, although there is no ultimate nature, there is a conventional nature, such as the nature of humans being hot and the nature of molasses being sweet, etc., because there are very many scriptures and valid reasonings that say so. Therefore, this is a fault of not knowing how to distinguish between nature or essence from the perspective of the two truths. Considering this, (it is said in the scriptures:) "Those who do not properly distinguish between these two truths do not understand the profound meaning of the Buddha's teachings." And so on. (It is also said:) "Those who know the distinction between the two truths are not confused about the Teacher's teachings. They accumulate all the collections and go to the other shore of excellence." And so on. Furthermore, merely through the difference of negation without difference of essence in the conventional sense, one cannot understand the object to be purified and the means of purification. Also, your view written in the letter is:
