After gold is seen by the gods, in order to be completely purified, just as Milarepa earnestly taught, similarly, the Buddhas fall into the impurity of afflictions and become complete jewel Buddhas. After looking at sentient beings, in order to purify them, they teach the Dharma to sentient beings. Thus it is said. Here, "in order to purify them" also establishes that the basis of purification is the Tathagatagarbha, and the defilement to be purified is not the Tathagatagarbha. Furthermore, in this very scripture, it says: "What is to be realized and realization, in order to realize the limbs, abide in order, the three causes of purification are conditions." Thus, it is said that the Tathagatagarbha is what needs to be purified, and it is not the defilement to be purified, so it is necessarily established that it is the basis of purification. Furthermore, what is suchness, when it has adventitious defilements, is the basis of purification, and when the defilements are purified, it is the result of purification. As it is said: Lord Maitreya said, "The basis of purification and the result of purification, with defilements and suchness and without defilements." And "what is to be realized and realization," and so on. In the Noble Sutra of the Limitless Gate of Purification, it is also said that the self-arisen wisdom, which has the same meaning as the Tathagatagarbha, and the omniscient wisdom need to be purified and are the basis of purification. As it is said: "This gate is the supreme Dharma and makes the omniscient wisdom completely pure. The Bodhisattva purifies the self-arisen wisdom with that gate, and after obtaining the self-arisen wisdom, turns the wheel of Dharma, gradually purifies the Dharma gates of immeasurable sentient beings, and in order to completely purify the gate of Nirvana, also introduces the gate of omniscient wisdom." And so on. Furthermore, the Tathagatagarbha, which has many names such as Dharmata, is the basis of all Dharmas, so it is the place where defilements reside and also the place for purifying defilements. As the basis of all Dharmas, in the commentary on the Uttaratantra, a sutra is quoted and says: The realm of beginningless time.

It is the abode of all dharmas. Because it exists, all beings and nirvana can be attained. Thus it is said. Then, how is it that it has no beginning? From the perspective of the very essence of the Tathagata, the prior limit is not visible. This is what is taught and well established. The term 'dhatu' is as follows: For the sake of that, O Bhagavan, what is the essence of the Tathagata? This is the essence of the dharma that transcends the world, the essence of the dharma that is completely pure by nature. 'It is the abode of all dharmas' means: As it is said, O Bhagavan, for the sake of that, the essence of the Sugata is the connection, the non-differentiation, the inseparable, the uncompounded abode, basis, and support of all dharmas. O Bhagavan, the essence of the Tathagata is the unconnected, the differentiated dharma that is separable, the place of abandonment, the abode, and the support of compounded things. Thus it is said. 'Because it exists, all beings' means: As it is said, O Bhagavan, if the essence of the Tathagata exists, then it is designated as samsara. Thus it is said. 'Nirvana will also be attained' means: As it is said, O Bhagavan, if the essence of the Tathagata did not exist, then there would be no aversion to suffering, and nirvana would not be desired, sought, or longed for. Thus it is extensively said. It is said, and also in the Uttaratantra: Earth depends on water, water on wind, wind thoroughly abides in space. Space does not abide in wind and water, and the element of earth. Likewise, the aggregates, elements, and sense bases abide in karma and afflictions. Karma and afflictions do not abide in proper attention. Improper attention always abides. Improper attention thoroughly abides in the purity of mind. The nature of mind, all dharmas, does not abide in anything. And so on, extensively said, and in its commentary, a sutra is quoted: Earth and water and so on abide in space, as an example. Likewise, the aggregates, elements, and sense bases thoroughly abide in karma and afflictions, and karma and afflictions thoroughly abide in improper attention.

Pa. Improper attention is to abide in complete purity by nature. Therefore, the nature of the mind is luminosity, without being afflicted by adventitious afflictions. Thus it is said. Thus and so on. Also, as the sutra quoted there says: The Buddha, who is indivisible and inconceivable, possesses Dharma that surpasses the sands of the Ganges River, is shown as the Dharmakaya of the Tathagata. Bhagavan, this Dharmakaya of the Tathagata, which has not been liberated from the womb of afflictions, is called the Tathagatagarbha. Thus it is said. Also, in the Dense Ornament Sutra, it says: The various grounds are the alaya, the Sugata-garbha is also good. The Tathagatas teach the essence with the name of the alaya. The essence proclaimed as the alaya is not understood by the dull-witted. Thus it is said. The essence proclaimed as the alaya is not the object of the conceptual mind. Thus and so on. Also in the Lankavatara Sutra, it says: The Tathagatagarbha is good, it is not the realm of activity of logicians. Thus it is said. The mind is naturally luminous, the Tathagatagarbha is good. Thus and so on. The venerable Nagarjuna also said: Therefore, the basis of all dharmas, without a place to dwell, like an illusion, destroying the existence of peace, this emptiness should always be meditated upon. Thus it is said. Also in the Shri Vajramala Tantra, it says: The element that dwells in the middle of them, pervades and is not an object of experience, just as sesame oil is in sesame seeds, just as fire is in wood. Likewise, it pervades all dharmas, but is not seen. Like the sky, it is without stain, it is the supreme basis of all dharmas. Thus it is said. In the Dakini Vajra Tent also, it says: Just as the sky is all phenomena, so it is the basis of all dharmas. It is the mind of supreme bliss and purity, the mind of purity like the sky is also. Thus and so on, all these explain that it is the basis of all dharmas of samsara and nirvana, and also the goodness of the Sugata-garbha, and also the realm of the two emptinesses and the mind of supreme bliss and purity. These are all referring to the ultimate other-emptiness, not all forms and so on are self-
