are driven away. Similarly, here, like a beehive, are all the sentient beings of the three realms. They have countless afflictions, and in the center of the afflictions, I see the Tathagata dwelling. I also, in order to purify and attain Buddhahood, eliminate afflictions like driving away bees. Thus it is said. Here, in saying "in order to purify and attain Buddhahood," the Buddha refers to the first Buddha, the Tathagatagarbha. The term "purify" refers to the basis of purification, not the defilement to be purified. The alaya-vijñana (store consciousness) cannot be the Buddha. Furthermore, in the same sutra: "Sons of good family, this is the dharmata (nature of phenomena) of all dharmas. Whether the Tathagatas appear or do not appear, these sentient beings always possess the Tathagatagarbha. Sons of good family, because they are covered by the pods of afflictions that deserve to be reproached, in order to destroy their pods of afflictions and also in order to completely purify the wisdom of the Tathagatas, the Tathagatas, Arhats, perfectly awakened Buddhas, Bodhisattvas teach the Dharma to them, and they also delight in doing this." Thus it is said. Here also, in saying "in order to completely purify the wisdom of the Tathagata," the wisdom of the Tathagata is the self-arisen wisdom, the Tathagatagarbha. The term "completely purify" refers to the basis of purification, not the defilement to be purified. The alaya-vijñana is a temporary defilement, therefore it cannot be the wisdom of the Tathagata. Furthermore, in the same sutra: "Sons of good family, again, for example, rice, barley, buckwheat, or grains, their essence is completely protected by the husk. Until they are separated from their husk, the activities of eating, cooking, and tasting are not done. Sons of good family, whatever men or women desire to engage in activities of eating and cooking, etc., they harvest and thresh, removing the pods and outer skin of the husk. Sons of good family, similarly, the Tathagata also, with the eye of the Tathagata, sees all sentient beings, that the Tathagata himself, the Buddha himself, the self-arisen himself, is wrapped and abiding by the shell of the pod of afflictions.

I say: Sons of lineage, here the Tathagata, removing the husk of afflictions, the Tathagata himself is completely purified, thinking how to liberate these sentient beings from all the husks of afflictions, to become Tathagatas, Arhats, perfectly enlightened Buddhas in the world, and teaches the Dharma to sentient beings. Then, at that time, the Blessed One spoke these verses: Like rice or the fruit of paddy, or barley or wheat, whatever they may be, as long as they have husks, they cannot do anything. If they are pounded and the husks are removed, they can do all kinds of things. Those essences with husks are useless to sentient beings. Similarly, I see that the Buddha-nature of all sentient beings is covered by afflictions, and in order to purify them, I teach the Dharma in order to quickly attain Buddhahood. All sentient beings have the same Dharma-nature as me, entangled by hundreds of afflictions, in order to purify them completely, I teach the Dharma in order to quickly become victorious. Thus it is said. Here, 'the Tathagata himself is completely purified,' and 'in order to purify them,' these indicate that the basis of purification is the Tathagatagarbha. The reason is as before. 'Removing the husk of afflictions,' etc., indicates the defilements to be purified, in order like the essence and husk of a fruit. Again, in the same sutra it says: Like a lump of human gold, fallen into filth, although it has been like this for many years, its essence will not be destroyed. The gods, seeing it with their divine eyes, in order to purify it, say to others: 'Here is precious gold, purify it, and use it to do things.' Similarly, I see that all sentient beings are oppressed by afflictions for a long time, knowing that their afflictions are temporary, and in order to purify their nature, I teach the Dharma with skillful means. Thus it is said. Here, the nature in 'purify the nature' is the self-luminous nature.
