Subhuti, that which is called 'unconditioned dharma' is that which has no arising and no ceasing, and does not change from abiding to something else, namely, the exhaustion of desire, the exhaustion of hatred, the exhaustion of delusion, the undeluded suchness, the non-other suchness, suchness, dharmata, the realm of dharma, the stainlessness of dharma, the inconceivable realm, the ultimate reality. Subhuti, this is called unconditioned dharma. Thus and so forth have been spoken. Therefore, just as whatever is dependent origination is emptiness, to hold that whatever is emptiness is dependent origination is in accordance with some Tibetan teachers, but is extremely discordant with the intention of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. The Buddhas and Bodhisattvas have said that whatever is dependent origination is emptiness, but have not said that whatever is emptiness is dependent origination. If it is argued that since it has been said that whatever is dependent origination is emptiness, it is thereby established that whatever is emptiness is dependent origination, then it would follow that since whatever is sin is emptiness, whatever is emptiness is sin, which is too extreme, because the reasoning is the same. But this is not acceptable, because there is emptiness that is not sin, namely virtue. Furthermore, if by that it becomes this, then since whatever is suffering is also emptiness, it would follow that whatever is emptiness is suffering, which is too extreme, because the reasoning is the same. But this is not acceptable, because it has also been said that emptiness that is not suffering is great bliss. Similarly, if it is shown that everyone has a mind, does it follow that everyone with a mind is a person? Thus and so forth, many other extreme consequences would arise. Therefore, such a way of reasoning that reverses the pervasion is the way of those who do not understand the nature of reasoning. Now, it would be appropriate to abandon that way and listen to even just one pure line of reasoning. However, although it is said that whatever is dependent origination is emptiness, it does not follow that whatever is emptiness is dependent origination. If it is thought that there are many pervasions of dependent origination in emptiness, then such are only self-emptiness that is not separate from dependent origination.
