It is like the manifestation of a clear, cloudless sky, obtaining a flawless jewel, and having all needs fulfilled. Therefore, following the scriptural and logical statements of the all-knowing one, as well as the supreme instructions, it is not appropriate to consider the impurities to be purified and the basis of purification as inseparable and one, because during purification, there are differences such as what can be separated and what cannot be separated, and they are different from many different perspectives. For example, it is not appropriate to consider clouds and the sky as one, just as it is not appropriate to consider the previously mentioned mud and jewel as inseparably one. What are the many differences? The basis of purification is the nature of reality (chos nyid), while the impurities to be purified are phenomena (chos can). The basis of purification is ultimate truth (don dam), while the impurities to be purified are conventional truth (kun rdzob). The basis of purification is unconditioned (‘dus ma byas pa), while the impurities to be purified are conditioned (‘dus byas). The basis of purification is beyond the realm of consciousness (rnam shes kyi chos), while the impurities to be purified are not beyond the realm of consciousness. The basis of purification is beyond particles and moments (rdul dang skad cig), while the impurities to be purified are not beyond them. The basis of purification is beyond the imprints of breath movement and change (dbugs ‘gyu ba dang ‘pho ba’i bag chags), while the impurities to be purified are not beyond them. The basis of purification is the domain of non-conceptual wisdom (mi rtog ye shes kyi spyod yul), while the impurities to be purified are not beyond the domain of conceptual thought (rtog ge’i spyod yul). The basis of purification is beyond grasping and being grasped (gzung ‘dzin), while the impurities to be purified are not beyond them. The basis of purification is immutable great bliss spontaneously accomplished (‘gyur med bde chen lhun gyis grub pa), while the impurities to be purified are accompanied by suffering and its causes (sdug bsngal rgyu dang bcas pa). The basis of purification is naturally beyond the world (rang bzhin gyis ‘jig rten las ‘das pa), while the impurities to be purified are not beyond the world (‘jig rten las ma ‘das pa). The basis of purification is naturally great nirvana (rang bzhin gyis mya ngan ‘das pa chen po), while the impurities to be purified are not beyond nirvana (mya ngan las ma ‘das pa). The basis of purification is beyond the obscurations of demons, afflictions, knowledge, and meditative absorption (bdud dang nyon mongs pa dang shes bya dang snyoms ‘jug gi sgrib pa), while the impurities to be purified are not beyond them. The basis of purification is beyond the three or eight sufferings (sdug bsngal gsum mam brgyad), while the impurities to be purified are not beyond them. The basis of purification is beyond the aggregates of appropriation, elements, and sources (nyer len gyi phung po dang khams dang skye mched rnams), while the impurities to be purified are not beyond them. The basis of purification is beyond all realms of the inexpressible, unthinkable, and unutterable (smra bsam brjod du med pa’i dbyings kun), while the impurities to be purified are expressible, thinkable, utterable, and temporary (smra bsam brjod du yod cing nyi tshe ba). The basis of purification is beyond all examples and is unique (dper bya kun las ‘das shing thun mong ma yin pa), while the impurities to be purified are not beyond examples.

These are also common examples. The object to be purified is the immeasurable place of qualities and goodness, and what is to be purified is the immeasurable place of faults and defects. There are many such things, and those with wisdom should understand the differences through the many aspects. Similarly, it should also be clearly understood through examples such as: the object to be purified is like unconditioned space, and what is to be purified is like clouds and fog, etc. The object to be purified is like the sun and moon obscured by clouds, and what is to be purified is like the obscuring cloud masses. The object to be purified is like a wish-fulfilling jewel, and what is to be purified is like the mud covering it. The object to be purified is like a lamp inside a vase, and what is to be purified is like the inside of the vase. The object to be purified is like pure water deep in the earth, and what is to be purified is like the soil covering it. The object to be purified is like the Buddha residing in the lotus heart, and what is to be purified is like the lotus heart covering it. The object to be purified is like a lump of honey, and what is to be purified is like the many bees swarming upon it. The object to be purified is like the essence of grain, and what is to be purified is like its husk. The object to be purified is like a great sandalwood tree submerged in unclean mud, and what is to be purified is like the uncleanliness covering it. The object to be purified is like an inexhaustible great treasure, and what is to be purified is like the soil covering them. The object to be purified is like a Buddha image wrapped in tattered clothes, and what is to be purified is that same dirty, tattered cloth. Similarly, in the womb of a wicked woman is a lord of men, in a stone is radiant beryl, in clay and gravel is gold, in milk is butter, in wood is fire, in sesame seeds is sesame oil, and so on. Through very many examples, it is said that the object to be purified, from within the sheath of adventitious stains, is where the Sugata-garbha resides, and it is also said that they are not one and the same, so the view of the omniscient one and the view of some Tibetans seem to be inconsistent. Similarly, the object to be purified and the agent of purification are undifferentiated and one, which is also the view of some Tibetans.
