That which is called "having an eye disease" is: being covered by yellow and blue cataracts, becoming blurred. This condition is curable; as long as a doctor is not found, one will remain blind, but upon finding a doctor, one will quickly regain sight. Similarly, being covered by blue cataracts and becoming blurred is like this realm being covered by a mass of afflictions. As long as one delights in the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, "I" will not be a true "I," but rather an "I" belonging to "I." When one delights in the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, at that time, one will become a true "I," and thereafter, one will become a person capable of practice. Just as that person's eye disease is the blurring of yellow and blue cataracts, so too should one view afflictions. The Tathagatagarbha is definitely present, like an eye. That which is called "the moon covered by clouds" is: just as the orb of the moon covered by thick clouds is not visible, so too is the realm covered by a mass of afflictions not visible. When the multitude of afflictions is separated like clouds, then the realm will become visible like a full moon. That which is called "digging a well" is: for example, a person digs a well, and as much as dry earth appears, that much he thinks, "This is far from water." But when clay appears, he knows for certain, "The water is near." When he reaches water, then the digging is completed. Similarly, the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas please the Tathagatas, and by diligently practicing, they dig away afflictions. Having dug, they find the Tathagatagarbha like water. That which is called "a lamp inside a vase" is: just as the light of a lamp inside a vase is neither clear nor bright, and does nothing for sentient beings, so too, although the Tathagatagarbha is said to possess infinite marks and qualities, it does not benefit sentient beings. However, when the vase is broken, the lamp's own light appears and benefits living beings. Similarly, afflictions

In the vase of samsara, filled with countless openings, the essence of the Tathagata, the light of awareness, blazes forth like a lamp. When the afflictions of samsara are exhausted, like a lamp extinguished when a vase is broken, the Tathagata will benefit sentient beings. Through these four reasons, just as I possess the realm of sentient beings, it should be understood that all sentient beings possess it. Thus, and so on. Some people, wishing to observe the "self," think to themselves: If I were to seek out my afflictions, and my beginning and end, would I find them? Reply: Bhagavan, one would not. If afflictions are removed, then afterwards the "self" can be found. Thus, and so on. Similarly, in the Sutra of the Goddess Shri, it is also said: Bhagavan, the essence of the Tathagata is neither a "self," nor a sentient being, nor life, nor a person. Bhagavan, the essence of the Tathagata is not the domain of those who have fallen into the view of the aggregates of sentient beings, who have been deluded by inverted views, and whose minds are distracted from emptiness. Bhagavan, this essence of the Tathagata is the essence of the supreme realm of Dharma, the essence of the Dharmakaya, the essence of the Dharma that transcends the world, the essence of the Dharma that is naturally pure. Bhagavan, the essence of the Tathagata, which is naturally pure and not defiled by adventitious, proximate afflictions, this is the realm of the Tathagata, which I consider to be inconceivable. And so on, because these are extensively taught. Although the Sugata-garbha exists, sentient beings do not see it because it is obscured by the faults of sentient beings. If the Sugata-garbha did not exist, then the ultimate truth would also not exist, because they are of the same meaning. This is not possible, because in the Ratnamegha Sutra it says: Son of good family, the ultimate truth is the Tathagata, whether they appear or not, they are indestructible. Son of good family, therefore, Bodhisattvas shave their hair and beards, don the robes of a renunciate, and with faith go forth from home to homelessness.
