The most supreme (Nirvana) will be obstructed. Saying this, therefore, one will constantly sink into the three lower realms. Like this and so on, it has been said very much, so one must discern the places of what should be taken and what should be abandoned without error. Like this, having spoken of immeasurable benefits and faults, are those statements of indirect meaning? If you ask this, it is not so, because it is said that the ultimate Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha are permanent and abide in the true meaning. Because teaching impermanence is of indirect meaning, and teaching permanence is of definitive meaning. How is that? In the Great Nirvana Sutra transmitted from China, it also says: What is abiding in meaning and not abiding in words? Meaning is the realization of meaning. The meaning of realization is non-retreating. Non-retreating is perfection. The meaning of perfection is that the Thus-Gone One constantly abides, unchanging and unmoving. The meaning of the Thus-Gone One constantly abiding, unchanging and unmoving is that the Dharma is permanent. The meaning of the Dharma being permanent is that the Sangha is permanent. This is abiding in meaning, called not abiding in words. And, if it is said that the Thus-Gone One is impermanent, changing and moving, that is the meaning of guidance. If it is said that the Thus-Gone One is permanent, unchanging and unmoving, that is called the definitive meaning. Like this, the indirect and definitive meanings are well separated and spoken. Furthermore, the Blessed One teaches permanence, and teaches that all sentient beings have the Tathagatagarbha, and prophesies that the noble beings who have accumulated roots of virtue before countless Buddhas will certainly appear in the future, and so on. In the Great Nirvana Sutra translated by Lha'i Zla-ba, it says: Alas! Having heard this great sutra and "The Thus-Gone One is permanent," those who generate faith are those who do the most difficult thing, as rare as the Udumbara flower in the world. After my Nirvana, this great sutra will become very difficult to obtain. In the future, those sentient beings who strive to hear this great sutra will be abandoned by many sentient beings. Question: How long will it be before sentient beings abandon it? What kind of sentient beings will proclaim the true Dharma?

Venerable Upali reported: Good son, after my Nirvana, it will circulate in Jambudvipa for four thousand years, after which it will disappear underground. Good son, for example, in a place where sugar cane, rice, grains, honey, sugar, milk, and ghee are abundant, there are also other sentient beings who are inferior in maturity and have not accumulated merit. They say: If we eat these delicious foods, our body's elements will become ill. They say this, and then eat barnyard millet, barley, and coarse grains. In that place, some others do not even want to hear the names of barnyard millet, barley, and coarse grains. Just as some people only eat sugar cane, rice, and grains, this Great Nirvana Sutra is also like that. Some sentient beings do not even want to hear it. They eat barnyard millet, barley, and coarse grains without merit, and just as they hate sugar cane and rice, the practitioners of the Śrāvakayāna will also hate the Mahāyāna. However, others who hear this sutra and accumulate merit, like eating rice, will eventually attain the fruit of the Mahāyāna. Good son, for example, the kings who live in remote mountains or barren lands, even if they have sugar cane and rice, they will think that these grains are very rare and worry about running out. So they do not eat them themselves, but eat barnyard millet, barley, and coarse grains, and fill the carts with sugar cane, rice, and grains, and offer them to the great king. Then, other sentient beings in their own lands, even if they have never seen rice before, will be able to eat it because of the king's grace. Good son, similarly, wherever there are four people serving as Dharma masters, whenever and wherever a bodhisattva-mahāsattva appears in the world, or wherever he lives, for his sake, those people will seek and collect the chapters of the Mahāyāna sutras with rewards, and then put them in the covers of books, either to gain fame and fortune, or to practice the Dharma, or to display them as a symbol of offering.
