Yes, it is better to fully touch and embrace this burning pile of wood than to (believe in heresy). Those who speak of demons, say so. Those who hold on to the inverted Dharma are liars. For those who say, "The Tathagata is impermanent," it is better to die by fully touching the burning pile of wood with their tongue than to (believe in heresy). That word should not even be heard. Those who cannot establish "The Tathagata is permanent" are to be mourned. And so on. Son of the lineage, moreover, those who do not know that the Tathagata is permanent are the best of the blind. I say so. Those who know that the Tathagata is permanent, even if they only have flesh eyes, have divine eyes. I say so. Son of the lineage, moreover, those who hear this sutra and know and understand that the Tathagata is permanent have divine eyes. I say so. Even if they have divine eyes, those who do not know that the Tathagata is permanent have flesh eyes. I say so. Even in countless eons, those people cannot see or show what my beginning and end are like. Therefore, I say that because they are far from meditating on the Tathagata as permanent, they have flesh eyes. And so on. The Tathagata is permanent, stable, and constant. This is the Dharma nature of all Buddhas. Those who see the Tathagata as impermanent do not know the Dharma nature. I say so. Those are persons. I say so. Those are not valid cognitions. I say so. The four persons who are not like that are valid cognitions. Those who are skilled in the intentional words of the four persons, who know the secret reality of the Tathagata, and who know that it is permanent, it is impossible for them to even generate the thought that "the Tathagata is impermanent," because those four persons are themselves or the Tathagata Arhat Samyaksambuddha. Any other sentient beings, those persons who are skilled in all the intentional words of "the Tathagata is permanent."

Those also become valid means of cognition and supports. If I say that, why are those four not divine supports? Monks, your support is the nature of reality, which is the meaning of what is directly known by the hearers, and do not speak of what is not the nature of reality. The nature of reality means striving to think that the Tathagata is permanent, not striving for a person. If someone with broken precepts, greedy for wealth, says that the Tathagata is impermanent, then those people are not valid means of cognition. And so on. In the Great Nirvana Sutra transmitted from China, it is also said: Just as when the vagina of a poor woman crossed the Ganges, she thought her son was pitiful, and her body and life disappeared. Son of good family, the Dharma-protecting Bodhisattva is also like that. Even if body and life are in danger, one should not say that the Tathagata is the same as conditioned phenomena. Therefore, by saying that the Tathagata is the same as unconditioned phenomena, one will attain unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, just as that poor woman was reborn as Brahma. Why is that? Because of protecting the Dharma. What Dharma is protected? It is saying that the Tathagata is unconditioned. Son of good family, that person may not expect liberation, but naturally attains liberation, just as that poor woman did not expect to become Brahma, but was naturally reborn as Brahma. Manjushri, for example, a person went on a long journey as a guest, and was exhausted on the road. He slept in someone else's house, and that house caught fire. He was very scared and thought: I will surely be eaten by ghosts and die. Thinking this, because of shame, he wrapped his body in clothes. After he died, he was reborn in the Heaven of the Thirty-Three. Then he was reborn as the Great Brahma King eighty times. Then, for a full hundred thousand years, he was reborn as a Chakravartin King in the human realm. That person was never born in a bad realm, but was reborn from one better place to another peaceful place. Therefore, Manjushri, son of good family

O sons, those who are ashamed and have a sense of honor should not regard the Tathagata, the Blessed One, as being in accordance with conditioned phenomena. Manjushri, those who hold evil views, the Tirthikas, say, 'The Tathagata is in accordance with conditioned phenomena.' Monks who uphold morality should not regard the Tathagata as being conditioned in that way. If it is said, 'The Tathagata is conditioned,' that is a lie. It should be known that such a person, immediately after death, will be born in the hell realms, just as if that person were dwelling in my house. Manjushri, the Tathagata is truly of the nature of the unconditioned, therefore he should not be called conditioned. Manjushri, from now on, when wandering in samsara, abandon ignorance and seek true wisdom. The Tathagata is unconditioned. If a person views the Tathagata in such a way, he will be endowed with the thirty-two marks and will quickly awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Furthermore, sons of good family, if a Bodhisattva Mahasattva possesses ten qualities, he will see from the signless Nirvana to the state of non-existence. What are the ten? They are possessing faith. How does one possess faith? It is to believe that the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha are eternal, and that the Buddhas of the ten directions also manifest through skillful means, and to believe that all sentient beings, even those with wrong views, possess the Buddha-nature. Not believing that the Tathagata has birth, old age, sickness, death, ascetic practices, Devadatta causing dissension in the Sangha, blood flowing from the Tathagata's body, the Tathagata ultimately passing into Nirvana, and the complete exhaustion of the sacred Dharma, this is called a Bodhisattva possessing faith. And so on. Furthermore, by three things one will sink into the three lower realms. What are the three? They are saying that the Tathagata is impermanent and is cessation; saying that the sacred Dharma is also impermanent and is changing and transforming; and the Sangha Jewel
