I am not without self, nor am I completely impure. Son of lineage, for example, a poor man has a treasure of jewels in his house. If he does not see it, because he does not see it, there is no permanence, no happiness, no self, and no complete purity. A virtuous friend says to him: If you have a treasure of jewels and gold in your house, why are you so poor and suffering, impermanent, unhappy, without self, and without complete purity? After saying this, he then uses a method to make him see it. After seeing it, that person obtains permanence, happiness, self, and complete purity. The Buddha-nature is also the same, sentient beings do not see it. Therefore, because they do not see it, there is no permanence, no happiness, no self, and no complete purity. Virtuous friends, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, show it by various methods and make them see it. Having seen it in this way, sentient beings obtain permanence, happiness, self, and complete purity. And, the Buddha-nature is permanent, but sentient beings are completely covered by ignorance, so they do not see it, just as rabbits and horses cannot cross the river of the twelve links of dependent origination. Why is that? Because they do not see the Buddha-nature. And so on. Simhanada Bodhisattva asked: World Honored One, why do you pass into nirvana in the middle of the spring month? Son of lineage, the middle spring month is called spring, in the spring month all things grow, all cultivation takes root, flowers and fruits fully bloom, all rivers roar like dragons, and all animals have swollen breasts. At that time, sentient beings give rise to the thought of permanence. In order to destroy the permanent mind of sentient beings, it is shown that all dharmas are impermanent, and only the Tathagata is shown to be permanent and unchanging. Son of lineage, among the six seasons, early winter is all dry and everyone dislikes it. Summer is moist, so everyone is happy and attached. In order to destroy the happiness of sentient beings in the world, permanence, happiness, self, and complete

Who is said to be pure? The Tathagata is also the same as this, because he has abandoned the self of the world and the purity of the world, therefore he has declared the true self and complete purity of the Tathagata. Furthermore, what is called non-abiding is called without support and without dwelling, and what is without support and without dwelling is called nothing at all, and what is nothing at all is called unborn, and what is unborn is called undying, and what is undying is called without characteristics, and what is without characteristics is called unbound, and what is unbound is called without attachment, and what is without attachment is called without outflows, and what is without outflows is good. Good is unconditioned. Unconditioned is great nirvana, eternal nirvana. Eternal is self. Self is completely pure. Completely pure is called bliss, and eternal, bliss, self, and completely pure are the Tathagata. And so on. Among them, what is called wisdom is like this: to view the Tathagata as eternal, blissful, self, and completely pure, to view all sentient beings as having the nature of the Buddha, to view the nature of dharma in two ways, namely emptiness and non-emptiness, eternal and non-eternal, bliss and non-bliss, self and non-self, completely pure and not completely pure, to understand the various dharmas that can be severed and the various dharmas that cannot be severed, to understand the various dharmas that arise from conditions and the various dharmas that are seen from conditions, to understand the various dharmas that become fruits from conditions and the various dharmas that do not become fruits from conditions, this is called having wisdom. And so on. Son of good family, I have not said that the six internal and external sense bases and the six consciousnesses are eternal, blissful, self, and completely pure, but I have said that the cessation of the six internal and external sense bases and the six consciousnesses is called eternal. Thus, because it is eternal, it is called self. Because it is eternal and self, it is called bliss. Because it is eternal, self, and bliss, it is called completely pure. And so on. Son of good family, although emptiness has been preached many times, it should not be called roaring the lion's roar.
