Endowed with land (cows). The milk that is milked just right without cutting off the remaining tilt is able to pacify all diseases. Then, the great king was amazed and said to the doctor: 'Khenpo, now I know the good and bad qualities of your milk.' Then the king commanded, 'Drink the milk!' When all the subjects heard the king and outsiders also commanding to drink the milk, they were disturbed and said, 'Has the king been possessed by a demon? Or is he trying to offend me?' Saying this, the people of the city and all the subjects gathered before the king. Seeing them, the king said, 'This doctor says that the milk is like this. What do you have to say?' Then, the king, the people of the city, and all the subjects were pleased and gave unparalleled honor to the doctor. Just as the effects of milk are shown, monks, the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One, endowed with knowledge and conduct, Gone to Bliss, Knower of the World, Tamer of Beings, Charioteer, Teacher of Gods and Humans, Buddha, Bhagavan, appeared in the world like a good doctor and went to all the heretics who are like bad doctors, completely subduing and destroying them, making the king happy instead of sad. In order to subdue the heretics, he taught that there is no self (Tibetan: བདག་མེད་དོ།, Sanskrit Devanagari: अनात्म, Sanskrit Romanization: anātma, literal meaning: no self). There are no sentient beings (Tibetan: སེམས་ཅན་མེད་དོ།, Sanskrit Devanagari: असत्त्व, Sanskrit Romanization: asattva, literal meaning: no sentient beings). There is no life (Tibetan: སྲོག་མེད་དོ།, Sanskrit Devanagari: अजीव, Sanskrit Romanization: ajīva, literal meaning: no life). There is no person (Tibetan: གང་ཟག་མེད་དོ།, Sanskrit Devanagari: अपृथग्जन, Sanskrit Romanization: apṛthagjana, literal meaning: no person).' The self taught by the heretics is like letters carved by worms. Therefore, I have taught all sentient beings that there is no self.' This is what is shown. 'No self is the word of the Buddha.' Thus, he imposed the constraint of the Dharma. Again, knowing the time for the sake of taming those who need to be tamed and for the benefit of sentient beings, at the very moment of teaching that all dharmas are without self, like a good doctor, he also correctly taught that there is a self. The self that worldly people speak of, as big as a thumb or as small as a millet seed, is not like that. The self that worldly people cling to is also not like that.

Thus. Here, all dharmas are without self. Thus it is said. All dharmas are not without self, for self is Suchness. Self is permanence. Self is quality. Self is solidity. Self is stability. Self is peace. Like the milk of a good doctor. The Tathagata also shows that he possesses Suchness. The four assemblies should strive to meditate on this. Thus and so on, it is extensively taught. In the Mahaparinirvana Sutra, which was transmitted from China: Therein, wise and intelligent ones discern and do not say that all things are impermanent in all respects. Why is that? Because in my body there is the seed of the Buddha-nature. If one says there is no self, foolish people will think that all the Buddha's teachings are without self. Wise and intelligent ones merely nominally posit no-self, but do not truly distinguish it. Knowing this, they do not generate doubt. If one says that the Tathagatagarbha is empty, foolish people will hear this and develop views of annihilation or non-existence. Wise and intelligent ones distinguish that the Tathagata is permanent, unchanging, and unmoving, making that distinction. If one says that liberation is like an illusion, foolish people will think that those who have attained liberation are of the nature of demons. Wise and intelligent ones discern that, like a lion among men, only the Tathagata is permanent, abiding, unchanging, and unmoving. Thus. What is the meaning of non-benefit? The meaning of non-benefit is what is said in the sutras: all sentient beings are impermanent, all suffering is empty, all is without self. What is said thus is called the meaning of non-benefit. Why is that? Because not understanding these meanings causes many beings to fall into the hell of uninterrupted suffering. Thus and so on. Therefore, the Buddha-nature is permanent, blissful, self, and completely pure. Because sentient beings do not see it. Impermanence, lack of bliss, no-self, impurity, the Buddha-nature is truly impermanent and without bliss.
