Moreover, the Pratyekabuddhas are also constantly present, but sentient beings are unable to see them, because it is their nature to truly show themselves and manifest. Son of good family, just as ice melts naturally when the sun rises, when this great Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra appears, merely hearing it will quickly eliminate the sins of those who have committed root downfalls and the five inexpiable sins. Therefore, the inconceivable realm of this Mahāparinirvāṇa is immeasurable for the sake of teaching the Tathāgatagarbha. Therefore, sons or daughters of good family should strive to learn the teachings of this sūtra, thinking that the Tathāgata is permanent, the excellent Dharma will not disappear, and the Sangha will not vanish. If they do so, they will also, like me, manifest in the state of Buddhahood. Question: Blessed One, what are the Bodhisattva-Mahāsattvas like? The Buddha replied: Whether they generate the mind of enlightenment or not, they will become Bodhisattva-Mahāsattvas. Question: How is that? The Buddha replied: Son of good family, just as the winter sun cannot melt ice, so too, through practicing all the sūtras and samādhis, from the perspective of the fruit of practice, those who generate the mind of enlightenment will not attain enlightenment, and those who do not generate the mind of enlightenment will not attain enlightenment. Why is that? Because, like the winter sun, their diligence is weak. The supreme fruit of practicing the sūtras is like the summer sun when it is hot, even before the sun rises, the extremely cold butter from the night will melt, and it can also warm the great ocean. Similarly, any son or daughter of good family who, upon hearing this Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra, whether they copy it themselves, or have others copy it, or respectfully make offerings, or do so for the sake of gain, respect, and the meaning of the verses, even if they think they do not need enlightenment, or even if they no longer want to generate the mind of enlightenment, that person...

Into all the pores of their bodies, the cause of enlightenment will enter like the summer sun. Therefore, sons of the lineage, they are Bodhisattvas, great beings. Thus I say. Therefore, this great sutra of inexhaustible enlightenment is a collection of merit, and therefore it is called great. It is vast and wide, and like the summer sun, it is endowed with splendor, and therefore it is called the Great Nirvana. Why is that? Because from this, the Tathagata-garbha, the essence of the Thus-Gone One, is shown to be eternal. Sons of the lineage, furthermore, the light of the stars and fireflies cannot surpass the light of the sun and moon and appear distinctly. The light of the sun and moon surpasses all and remains bright. Similarly, other lights cannot surpass the light of the Great Nirvana Sutra, which is the result of practicing all sutras and all samadhis, and appear distinctly. The light of the Great Nirvana Sutra surpasses all lights and appears clearly, entering into the pores of all sentient beings. Even if one thinks that the mind of enlightenment is not needed, even if it has not arisen, one will certainly obtain the cause of enlightenment, and therefore it is also called the Great Nirvana. Question: Even if one thinks that the mind of enlightenment is not needed, it can enter into all the pores of the bodies of all sentient beings and manifest as the cause of enlightenment. Please give a reason for this. World Honored One, in this teaching, what is defeat, what is the crime of immediate retribution, what is abandoning the sutras, and who are the greedy ones? If even if one does not generate the mind, thinking it is not needed, it can become the cause of enlightenment for enlightenment, then what is the difference in what the Buddha has said? Or please say that these four do not exist. Or please say that by this, obscurations will be purified. The World Honored One taught: Except for the greedy, merely hearing the name of the Great Nirvana Sutra will cause all

will become the cause. Those who have made offerings of respect to countless Buddhas will be able to hear this Great Nirvana Sutra. Those who are not the cause of virtue will obtain the cause of Bodhi. Therefore, in order to truly proclaim the Tathagatagarbha, this great sutra has great power. And so on, there are very many. In this way, the Buddha's teachings, the Great Vehicle, are a subtle part. This sutra is like the Kataka fruit. Son of the family, just as a flower that is about to bloom will open when exposed to the sunlight, immediately after hearing this Great Nirvana Sutra, there is no need to generate too much Bodhicitta. All clinging beings will involuntarily place the cause of Bodhi into every pore. Those with strong desires also have the Tathagatagarbha, but the obscurations are extremely severe. For example, just as a silkworm wraps itself up and cannot come out because it has not opened a door, the Tathagatagarbha also cannot be taken out of the holes of those with strong desires because of its own faults. Therefore, the cause of Bodhi cannot be obtained from the edge of samsara. Son of the family, just as lotuses, utpalas, water lilies, and white lotuses grow in mud but are not stained by mud, this great sutra is also like this. Even if the Mahayana practitioners have afflictions, they are classified as those without afflictions. Why are they not stained? Because of the blessing of the Tathagatagarbha, they are not stained. For example, when hail falls, it involuntarily enters the pores of all beings and pacifies all heat and suffering. This great sutra also enters every pore of all beings and involuntarily establishes them in the cause of Bodhi, except for those with strong desires who do not cling to generating Bodhicitta. And so on. Son of the family, for example, a great doctor sends medicine pills or the sound of medicine dispelling harm to a distant place for the sake of those who are possessed by spirits or snakes, saying: Medicine
