It is not the case that something did not exist before and exists now. If Nirvana itself were initially non-existent and only exists now, then the undefiled, eternally abiding Dharma nature would not be. Whether Buddhas appear or do not appear, the nature and characteristics are eternally abiding. Because sentient beings are obscured by afflictions, they do not see Nirvana and therefore think it does not exist. Bodhisattvas, great beings, who are skilled in discipline, samadhi, and wisdom, cut off afflictions and will see it. Therefore, Nirvana is an eternally abiding Dharma nature. Knowing that it is not something that did not exist before and now exists, it is therefore called permanent. Son of noble family, for example, in a well inside a dark room, there are various kinds of seven precious jewels. People know they exist, but because of the darkness, they cannot see them. Those skilled in wisdom and means, holding up a great lamp and looking, will see everything illuminated. They will not think, 'The water and the seven precious jewels did not exist before and now exist.' Nirvana is also like that; it has existed from the beginning, it is not something that only exists now. Because the darkness of afflictions obscures sentient beings, they do not see it. The Tathagata, who possesses the wisdom of omniscience, with extremely skillful means, erects the lamp of wisdom, causing Bodhisattvas to see the permanence, bliss, self, and purity of Nirvana. Therefore, wise people should not say of this Nirvana, 'It did not exist before and now exists.' And so on. Then the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, with a lion's roar, asked: 'Bhagavan, if all sentient beings possess the Buddha-nature, which is like a powerful diamond, then why do all sentient beings not see it?' The Bhagavan replied: 'Son of noble family, for example, colors are different, such as blue, yellow, red, and white, and shapes are different, such as long and short, and although they exist, a blind person cannot see them. Although they cannot see them, the differences between blue, yellow, red, and white, and
